Which side do you fall on? Is it reasonable to expect people to change things for the better? Do things mostly turn out for the best? What do you think?

I've been called a fount of optimism to a naive and immature degree by every self-declared cynic I've talked to, with the heavy implication that the cynics were smarter than me for their beliefs, and none of that really bothered me, so probably optimism lol

I don't think those people understand what optimism is about, though. Blithely believing "everything will turn out fine" and "everything will definitely get better" isn't realistic optimism, that's blind faith.

I'm a cynic that DESPERATELY wants to be an optimist. I have so much respect for and am outright jealous of people with positive attitudes and natures. I've been doing a lot of research regarding the topic in hopes that some of that magic might rub off on me; I hate being cynical and a downer.

I try to be a realist, probably end up being more of a cynicist and if my anxiety disorders hear I am forming opinions then I will become a catastophist real quick

Broadly cautious optimism. Assume the worst is possible at any given moment, so you won't be surprised, but never assume it is inevitable at any moment. Just Murphy-proof your decisions as best you can, and then say feck it and roll the dice on the rest.

The cynicism is strong in me.

Mostly because my whole life I've dealt with my family who are overly emotional (I don't mean crying easily but rather anger) so being cynical helps me keep plan b, c, d, etc. to avoid those kinds of situations. I've also dealt with a lot of, let's say, not very nice people who would throw me under a bus given the chance so cynism helps keep me on my feet at all times.

I do enjoy being around positive people, though. They are like fresh air to me and help me keep balance of my very cynical self.

Optimist. I have a deep and abiding belief that deep down all humans are capable of compassion, fairness, kindness and humility. I trust people to act that way. Sure, sometimes they don't. But often they do, and I would rather believe the best in someone than dismiss them before they can even try.

I have also noticed that if you DO believe the best in someone, and make sure they know, they will very often end up wanting to prove you right. Doesn't always work out, but we are social beings and want to be loved, admired and respected. Inspiring someone to want to better themselves is often just a case of telling them you think they are capable of it.

I think I like to pretend I can be an optimist, but really I'm cynical as fuck. I do try to keep it to myself though, I don't wanna bring down anyone else with me, lmao.

I guess I'd have to say cynical. People can be good and can change for the better, but it really seems like they mostly just don't care to, not on any grand scale but in small, petty, constant ways.

I try to plan for the probable (good and bad), be aware of the possible (good and bad), and not completely discount the improbable (good and bad). I hope for the good, realize that the bad may happen, but generally expect things to turn out okay in the end.

Idealistic cynic. I'm not an optimist, because I don't think things generally turn out for the best, and I don't think people naturally trend towards the better. A lot of things are shitty, and a lot of things will always be shitty - at least for a definition of always that amounts to "the duration of my lifetime and the period I can reasonably extrapolate on current circumstances to predict".

I think working towards a better world is a long, hard, painful slog, and that many if not most of the people doing it are going to die without seeing that better world come to pass. I also believe it's still worthwhile work, because it's not just the only way to move forward, it's the only way to preserve the ground we've gained.

I don't trust people at all, pretty much ever. I assume everyone is out to fuck me over all the time. But I also think that 99.99% of everybody are genuinely good people who are trying to do good things. And I know that our world and society is getting better and better every year in virtually every measurable way. And I do my best to be as nice to everyone as I can, even people I hate, because for the most part that kindness has been returned to me and I've met a lot of really wonderful people because of it.

But that doesn't mean I trust any of them at all, because I have no way of knowing which of those really nice wonderful people is secretly a fucking asshole (or which asshole is secretly really nice and awesome, for that matter.)

A little bit of both. Optimistic I'd say, if I had to choose. Basically, I'll think of the worst possible outcome in any given situation, and if push comes to shove I'll expect that. Anything else, and I'm a 'it could have been worse' kind of person. So most of the time I'm glad with that results.
