Re: Cynicism VS Optimism

I've been called a fount of optimism to a naive and immature degree by every self-declared cynic I've talked to, with the heavy implication that the cynics were smarter than me for their beliefs, and none of that really bothered me, so probably optimism lol

I don't think those people understand what optimism is about, though. Blithely believing "everything will turn out fine" and "everything will definitely get better" isn't realistic optimism, that's blind faith.

So then, what is realistic optimism, as you understand it

NAYRT—“everything will turn out for the best”= blind faith, “things suck and so do people”= pessimism, “if we work at it we can make things better”= optimism, “nothing anyone does matters in the end so do whatever you want”= nihilism.

In short, "There's always a chance."

It's unrealistic to think it will work all the time. But it's just as unrealistic to believe things can't work out. Do I think all racists wil suddenly change their minds? Nope! But do I believe there's always a chance they could? Yeah. Am I gonna treat them like I expect them to change tomorrow? No way! That'd be stupid. But if someone told me "there's no possible way to fix this problem" I'd believe they're unrealistically pessimistic.

I would respect their choice not to try. Sometimes I don't try either. Sometimes trying isn't worth it. But I don't deny there's a chance.

Let me add that I totally do not blame others for not trying. Sometimes it's dangerous. Sometimes it costs you too much. Sometimes you have tried 9000 times and it hasn't worked and you're just not the right person at the right time with the right influence that can make any sort of difference in the situation. That happens too and is totally understandable. Nobody should feel guilt about that.

But for me, there's always the "maybe someone else can. Maybe someday something will happen to change things. People do change. The only inevitability in history is change. And positive changes are, logically speaking, an undeniable possibility."

If a situation is affecting someone negatively and they want to just avoid it entirely for their own sanity though, I get it.
