Your description of the books makes me want to read them now. Related question then: If I haven't read the books or seen the movie, which do you recommend I start with?

I'd start with the books, especially if you're not familiar with Singapore at all. They give SUCH great (and funny) cultural background and details in the footnotes that really adds a lot to the story, and these details are largely missing from the film. You also get to know the characters (both the main characters and all the colorful supporting ones) so much better.
