Admittedly the first book is the one I don't re-read often enough (The third is my favorite), but I do remember only seeing or hearing about Kitty Pong in passing until the second book. The movie, frankly, gave her a little bit more to do.

We don't get to see a lot of Eddie's OTT foolishness - God I hope we get a third movie just for...well, you know I'm sure. There are a LOT of people in these books and I appreciate not wanting to hit us w/ all of them at once.

I do wish Eleanor was a bit more meddling...but part of me is also going "I don't want to see Michelle Yeoh act like a nagging nuisance.". I do expect Eleanor to be more underhanded in trying to stop the wedding or give Nick doubts in the 2nd movie.

Though with John Chu directing In The Heights, I wonder how long we'll have to wait.

I agree with you, OP. I thought the movie was adorable and the ending was pretty sweet, but after I finished watching, I kept wondering why so-and-so wasn't in it or why they didn't cover this or that part. I hope the sequel has more of Kitty Pong though. She's my favorite in the books.

Your description of the books makes me want to read them now. Related question then: If I haven't read the books or seen the movie, which do you recommend I start with?

I'd start with the books, especially if you're not familiar with Singapore at all. They give SUCH great (and funny) cultural background and details in the footnotes that really adds a lot to the story, and these details are largely missing from the film. You also get to know the characters (both the main characters and all the colorful supporting ones) so much better.

I get what you mean, OP. I agree that the books were entertaining, with so many characters and drama. Meanwhile, the film was still good, but a bit more of a conventional rom com than a satirical soap opera. Anyway, I look forward to the sequel!

Haven't read the books, but I believe you. I find books are nearly almost always better than the movie.

I thought the book (only read the first one) was absolutely horribly written and the movie was a huge improvement, personally. I much preferred the gaining mutual respect ending with Rachel and Eleanor, rather than the random thing with the inheritance and the relative in a coma or whatever. And I thought even the characters that were supposed to likable were deeply unlikable in the book, but in the movie they were more appealing.

Personally I liked the book a lot, but I totally agree about the movie ending for Rachel and Eleanor. Also Eleanor got to be more of a person in the movie, even if other characters were more thinly drawn due to time constraints. But there's going to be more movies!

/shrug I thought the first book was great. I do make allowances for first novels, however, and the series as a whole worked really, really well.

As for Rachel and Eleanor, I thought the whole "ha, I bet you at mah jong and now you realize I'm awesome" ending was... well, convenient for a movie, but kind of terrible as convincing plot. I thought the added story with Rachel's family was far more interesting. Re: unlikeable characters, I didn't mind because they're supposed to be unlikeable, that was the point.

I enjoyed most of the book (scanned through it, didn't read thoroughly) and didn't think it's horribly written at all, but I agree that a lot of the characters were far more unlikable. I think both fit their medium though. Books with more room to develop need more realistic characters to fill in the space to entertain, while movies as a shorter format need to make us fall in love faster so we can enjoy the outcome when the ending comes.

As someone who saw the movie but did not read the book, I enjoyed what I got quite a lot, and I plan on seeing the sequels.

Otherwise, this is a pretty standard complaint because a movie adaptation simply can't give as much detail as the book.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-21 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't just that the movie didn't give as much detail, it radically changed the ending.

I haven't read the books, but enjoyed the film a lot. It's a bit of a typical rom com but I still loved it. I could tell a lot of the characters had their personalities/involvement in the story shortened, but that tends to happen. It didn't affect the story for me. The actors were great with what was given to them.

But this definitely indicates to me that I will read the books after all the movies are released. I nitpick too much if I read a book before I see a movie, and a lot of times it affects my enjoyment of a book. It usually only happens if I read the book first.

I tried listening to the audio book after watching the movie and the footnotes were REALLY disruptive to the flow of the story. Maybe it's not like that reading it in print and I plan on giving it a second chance, but idk. A 2 hr movie is never going to cover all the details of the books, especially when there are a ton of characters. But I didn't feel like I needed to know every detail about Singaporean culture to understand the story? The only time I felt a little lost in the movie was the mahjong scene and even then I still enjoyed it. I would have felt the same way if they were playing chess tbh.
