I tried listening to the audio book after watching the movie and the footnotes were REALLY disruptive to the flow of the story. Maybe it's not like that reading it in print and I plan on giving it a second chance, but idk. A 2 hr movie is never going to cover all the details of the books, especially when there are a ton of characters. But I didn't feel like I needed to know every detail about Singaporean culture to understand the story? The only time I felt a little lost in the movie was the mahjong scene and even then I still enjoyed it. I would have felt the same way if they were playing chess tbh.
