If they can make the Magicians into a TV show, they can make Carry On too. But they won't.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, Magicians is based off Twilight and HP?

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but I don't understand why that would stop someone from adapting it in the first place

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
HP and Narnia.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay that makes more sense.

Magicians is way more subversion/deconstruction than wink-nudge-cmon-fic-fandom serial-numbers-filed-off-expy, which was always the vibe I got about Carry On. Like, part of the appeal of Carry On is that it's Take That to Harry Potter by being functionally Harry/Draco that you can pay for, and feel cool and hip because a Fan Made Good with a Real Book.

Magicians is interested in wizard school and portal fantasy tropes and conversing with earlier works, but Quelliot isn't a palette swap Harry/Ron and Quentin/Alice isn't Harmony just because because they're wizards and also friends, and Quentin is shy and Alice is smart, you feel me? There are very, very different stories and themes going.

I dunno, OP. A movie would be neat, but movie adaptations of my favorite books sometimes end up disappointing me. Not sure where the Twilight thing comes from. Twilight’s a guilty pleasure of mine (own all the books and movies) and everything I know about Harry Potter I learned through friends or cultural osmosis, but I could definitely see the Harry Potter influences. Twilight, not so much, but maybe I missed something.

The guy on the right is the sexy vampire love interest.

Baz isn’t that similar to Edward though and Simon’s no Bella.

Where he lacks in Edward, he makes up for in Draco (and vice versa).

(Same anon as ^^^)

Baz is intentionally a cross between Draco and Edward. And he works as a completely new and amazing character that I love (I say this as someone who was meh about Draco and hated Edward), but he IS both of them.

I want to read this series and like it because everyone else is reccing it to me, but for some odd reason I can't do YA. Turns me off really fast. It's probably because I'm some old pervert and I just can't get into books with characters that are underaged.

This series (actually only one book so far) starts with everyone 18.

Not really related to the secret, but I am baffled anyone is praising The Magicians in this thread. It was such a trash book I couldn't finish it. Lev Grossman didn't make any characters, he just plopped his cringey self-insert into a "gritty" magical school and dragged all his old ex-girlfriends and that one chick from high school who wouldn't fuck him along. :\ It subverts NOTHING.

Please, just no. Fangirl was bad enough, I don't ever want to see a movie made from any of her more 'fannish' titles.
