Laptop

(Anonymous) 2019-04-22 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to buy a laptop. Not a tablet with a keyboard, an actual laptop computer. Mostly for general use - writing, internetting, occasional gaming, the usual. I'd like to get back into travel writing, so something sturdy but portable (I do backpacking/hiking trips).

Ideally in the future at some point I'd like to get back into hobby photography and editing but I'm thinking that'd be a separate investment for the future?

Budget it pretty tight, but I'm willing to spend a bit to get more than a low grade budget computer. Unfortunately nothing super fancy/high end.

Any suggestions?

My recommendation is Lenovo

NAYRT but when I was shopping around I found Lenovo expensive. Not exactly budget laptop friendly.

They're definitely not the absolute cheapest, but they're far from the most expensive either, and they generally have good build quality and are very very sturdy.

I got a $200 Lenovo for my mom about four years back and it’s still chugging along pretty good.

I have a Dell Inspiron, have had it for about three years? It cost me just 200 bucks. I use it to do email, write in google.docs, watch netflix and etc., download the occasional torrent, go all over the internet on social media and such....

It does basically everything my desktop does, only from bed, a hotel room, or my brother's couch. I like it a lot and have no regrets of it.

Toshiba. I have one that's nearly 10 years old and is still running just fine with no issues whatsoever.

Refurb laptops are reasonable deals on a tight budget.

I'm very happy with my Dell

The best thing you can do is use a site like,
https://hdd.userbenchmark.com
to compare different brands/systems.

You obviously don't need anything top of the line, the site can help you decide on what you need, and tell you what does what in the FAQs. (I'd start with finding your computers stats/score and go from there)

The brands I tend to lean towards are Asus, and HP. I have a personal grudge against Acer, so don't buy from them. It's been like over a year since I've searched for anything, and my sister did most of the work, but my hoarding ways means I have my sisters laptop box on hand, and I think it might be a good match/start on where to look for a (imo, well-) above average laptop under $2,000 CAD.

The Envy x360 convertible, AMD Quad-Core Ryzen 5 2500U Accelerated Processor, 1TB Hard Drive, 8192MB SODIMM DDR4 SDRAM

https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
^ will let you know how well your computer should be able to process any given game/program. (I think it's the site I used) It's also a good way to measure just how much processing speed you might need.

(this is majorly a copypaste of a comment I've given before, so it might not match up to the details you're looking for, but hopefully it helps)
