I can't do these kind of fanworks either, but it's because my brain doesn't work that way. I can't listen to music and concentrate on reading at the same time.

I'm the same way. I can't read while listening to music (unless it's purely instrumental), and I definitely can't write while listening to music. It's not that I don't love music. Wow do I love music. And I really love listening to music and associating it with a character or a ship. But I just can't focus on other stuff with music playing.

Oddly, though, I do sudokus and other number puzzles better with music playing. I guess it just uses a different part of my brain or something?

Yes ... It probably does mean that.

When I was first learning to drive, I had to have silence; music or conversation were too distracting.
