... hey, as long as you're okay with missing some truly imaginative works as well, such as that Prof Pangea Holmes work that was made entirely of "photographs" of correspondence and found documents between Sherlock and Mycroft.

To be fair, most fics aren't like this and this doesn't sound like the kind of thing the OP is complaining about.

Yeah, fair point.

It's just that sweeping statements like "I will NEVER look at anything with embedded media because it could be creatively deficient" kinda bugs me.

The Pangaea work aside, I've seen a number of delightful stories with embedded pictures (and liked them enough that I've pulled in fanart drawn for stories that I've written) because I feel it can add to a reader's enjoyment. I've also written a story that included graphics of short found documents to add a sprinkle of epistolary flavor, and in that case a text-only rendition of the story would be missing some subtle-but-key elements.

.. however, that's graphics, not music. The more I think about the OP's post the more I agree that insisting that readers listen to a particular piece of music while they read is possibily too much: it's like an intrusive soundtrack in a movie, the type that seems to whack you over the head at each Big Emotional Moment to make sure you got it (something that I personally find irritating).

These wounds won't seem to heal. This pain is just too real.

My icons are always inspired by music. When making icons the best way for me is to put on my ipod and just go where the music takes me. I think that being inspired by music is a wonderful thing and i wouldn't trade that creation process in for the world.

Putting in music has helped me connect a soundtrack to anything I have been reading or playing.. but I consider it an enhancement more than anything.

I can't do these kind of fanworks either, but it's because my brain doesn't work that way. I can't listen to music and concentrate on reading at the same time.

Me, too. I can't even craft to music, it fucks up my concentration.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 08:24 am (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I can't read while listening to music (unless it's purely instrumental), and I definitely can't write while listening to music. It's not that I don't love music. Wow do I love music. And I really love listening to music and associating it with a character or a ship. But I just can't focus on other stuff with music playing.

Oddly, though, I do sudokus and other number puzzles better with music playing. I guess it just uses a different part of my brain or something?

Yes ... It probably does mean that.

When I was first learning to drive, I had to have silence; music or conversation were too distracting.

I get second hand embarrassment at authors insisting you must listen to this song to get the full experience by the same reasoning but... I have made mixes for my own fic more as like a mood mix to listen to afterwards. There have been some times when I would rather not associate what the author does with their fic if their music taste really doesn't appeal to me, but if they're overly relying on this other media to do the work (outside of actual songfic, I'm not sure how that even would be possible) I probably wouldn't care for their writing either way, and often there is some other reader for whom the music does enhance the experience.

TL:DR - More power to you if you can associate your villain ships with pop ballads as long as you don't expect that to be a universal experience.

I never touch the music links, and the whole "She was wearing a shirt [LINK] and skirt [LINK]" is just goddamn exhausting; but image based works, like #weedhorse69, are just fine by me (and that one in particular is a delight).

To be honest, I don't come across those kinds of fics very often at all. Maybe it just depends on the fandom. Occasionally, they'll be a couple of links in the author's notes at the end of a fic or chapter, and I may or may not click on those. Depends on what they are. I don't mind seeing more information on a place the characters visit in the fic, for example, but that's about it. I don't mind it when authors provide that kind of link, or if they happen to mention music that fit their mood while writing. If the fic names a particular piece of music that the characters hear, I can always just look it up if I want to.

I did once link to a video of WWII piston-driven warbirds because the chapter made a thing of the sound of their engines and I wanted to make sure readers could use it as a reference. Readers who already knew about the planes seemed to like the chapter fine. And the video, because WWII warbirds are cool.

... would this be "brother's keeper"?

Heh. Yeah, it would.

That scene left quite an impression on me as a reader! <3

<3 Thank you!

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, agreed. The exception is if the author MAKES an image to help tell the story (e.g. a “screencap” of text messages between characters). But no thank you, especially with music. I do not care about whatever song *spoke* to the author or characters. Just tell the damn story.

I actually like having the option to listen to a fanmix inspired by a particular fic. I rarely actually listen to the fanmix, because I can't read and listen to music at the same time, but I like having the option.

However, there's definitely a difference between a fic that's designed around musical tracks, and a fic that is complete unto itself but if you happened to want it, there's a fanmix you could check out.

And yeah, it is really, really hard to write a good songfic. Some might say impossible.

That said, just the other day I read a (fairly highbrow) songfic, and I found two new songs I like. The fic itself was only so-so, but it was 100% worth it for the songs alone. \o/

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There's an exchange, Jukebox, where all the fanworks are based on music.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 12:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Mm, there's a difference between an author having, like... a moodboard/"cover" or like... illustrations for the fic and maybe an optional mix, and like... that attitude of 'you MUST listen to this music for the FULL EXPERIENCE', which... I've got broad tastes but there are still a lot of people where I won't enjoy the songs they pick? And it's the attitude of 'this is necessary to the fic' vs. 'this may or may not enhance your experience if you want it'. Like... I've had fun tracking down songs mentioned in actual published books, and creating a 'book soundtrack' sometimes, but the books' authors aren't saying it's necessary to the experience, I just like a few different authors who include details like that.
