It's just that sweeping statements like "I will NEVER look at anything with embedded media because it could be creatively deficient" kinda bugs me.
The Pangaea work aside, I've seen a number of delightful stories with embedded pictures (and liked them enough that I've pulled in fanart drawn for stories that I've written) because I feel it can add to a reader's enjoyment. I've also written a story that included graphics of short found documents to add a sprinkle of epistolary flavor, and in that case a text-only rendition of the story would be missing some subtle-but-key elements.
.. however, that's graphics, not music. The more I think about the OP's post the more I agree that insisting that readers listen to a particular piece of music while they read is possibily too much: it's like an intrusive soundtrack in a movie, the type that seems to whack you over the head at each Big Emotional Moment to make sure you got it (something that I personally find irritating).

Putting in music has helped me connect a soundtrack to anything I have been reading or playing.. but I consider it an enhancement more than anything.

TL:DR - More power to you if you can associate your villain ships with pop ballads as long as you don't expect that to be a universal experience.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-24 08:35 am (UTC)(link)However, there's definitely a difference between a fic that's designed around musical tracks, and a fic that is complete unto itself but if you happened to want it, there's a fanmix you could check out.
And yeah, it is really, really hard to write a good songfic. Some might say impossible.
That said, just the other day I read a (fairly highbrow) songfic, and I found two new songs I like. The fic itself was only so-so, but it was 100% worth it for the songs alone. \o/
