I get second hand embarrassment at authors insisting you must listen to this song to get the full experience by the same reasoning but... I have made mixes for my own fic more as like a mood mix to listen to afterwards. There have been some times when I would rather not associate what the author does with their fic if their music taste really doesn't appeal to me, but if they're overly relying on this other media to do the work (outside of actual songfic, I'm not sure how that even would be possible) I probably wouldn't care for their writing either way, and often there is some other reader for whom the music does enhance the experience.

TL:DR - More power to you if you can associate your villain ships with pop ballads as long as you don't expect that to be a universal experience.
