Not commenting on Miaka in particular, but Mary Sues are simply characters that twist the rules of the canon world and the behaviour of other canon characters in illogical ways. They don't have to be perfect.

In fact, percieved flaws, such as clumsiness or rudeness, are often tacked on to Mary Sue characters, but the surrounding world reacts to them as if they're simply endearing instead.

You could say that a Mary Sue character never suffers any conseqences for the "flaws" she's supposed to have.

Except that Miaka DOES suffer a lot of consequences for her flaws throughout the series, so I'm not sure that really applies to her.

I don't remember FY very well, and that's why I spoke of Mary Sues in general, and not about Miaka. I did specify, you know...

Though I remember finding it a bit strange that so many people loved this rather dim and not very well-mannered ordinary school girl.

Well, for me, I liked the way she DID grow and change throughout the course of the series. Plus I could identify rather easily with her because she's a lot like me in many ways (save having the guys all over me; I certainly wouldn't mind that, though!). I thought it was nice to see a heroine who did have faults and flaws and who was able to overcome them and basically grow up.

She was a bit young for me, I think, and I have almost nothing in common with her personality-wise, so I think that's why I forgot. Plus, I watched it abut seven or eight years ago, heh.

I was about 14 or 15 when I watched it, so that's probably at least part of the reason I could identify with her so strongly.

... wow, that makes me feel old now, heh.
