Like I said... I really am starting to think that we just entered on different views. You entered thinking you'd be impressed while I entered thinking I'd be disappointed. I watched the first 21 episodes of the anime, I was impressed, but could not see the hyper. It was good, but not as great as people made it out to be, so, after hearing my friends bash the manga, I was really not expecting to get past the third volume, but I did, finding myself like the manga a lot. You, on the other hand, from what I gather, really loved the anime and then expected the manga to be much better due to the hype. The manga fell short because you compared it to the anime, which effected you greatly.

Honestly, I see everything you are saying and can say that it makes a hell of a lot of sense. If I had went into the manga looking for something worth the hype that it received online, I'd probably be just as disappointed as you. The characters do lack a sense of balance of those three, but I like them despite that. Ran Fan has more inner strength and physical strength than I ever hope to have and look up to her for it. She cut off her own arm, which required great inner strength to make herself do, but I do see how she lacks development. Winry gains more development, but as you said it is way later in the series than it should be. Honestly, Winry's poor design made me frustrated until she faced Scar a second time, showing that her character isn't unstable any more. She faced Scar straight on and treated him the same way her parents did and felt normal doing so.

As for Riza, would it be okay to agree to disagree? My opinion is very confusing and hard to explain. Then again, I crammed 87 chapters of manga down my throat in the course of 4 days. oO;

I admit Arakawa is not prefect, but compared to the females I'm used to from shonen manga, these have character, but if I compare them to the best female heroines I know, they fall short, but most of the female heroines I like are from video games or from a more selected field of manga.
