Not OP or anything, but I'm having trouble seeing the "huge difference". Both are canon by Word of God. But if there's no actual gay content or reference to being gay in the narrative of the game itself, it's literally the same situation.

It was depicted in canon content outside of the game, as opposed to the creators twitter

Well, Dumbledore being gay with Grindelwald (sp?) seemed pretty implied in the new movie. I grant it wasn't quite explicit but the intention was pretty obvious.

Yeah but the difference between “implied” and “depicted in canon explicitly” is literally what people are talking about here - HP does one, Overwatch does the other

Also, "implied" is a word that can mean a lot of different things & there's a lot of detail you would have to drill down into and and a lot of interpreting and closely reading the text. I mean, if you cared enough to do so.

For Overwatch, it's not Word of God. The comics and videos outside of the game ARE the ongoing narrative of Overwatch. So it's in the ongoing narrative. Soldier 76 talked about his ex-boyfriend in the ongoing narrative. It was shown other characters are aware of his gayness and previous gay relationship in the ongoing narrative, and say as much. That's how it was revealed. It wasn't even subtext or anything.

That's a pretty huge difference.

It's not like they announced Doomfist is a furry on Twitter then provided no canon scenes to back it up, or something.

also tracer literally being depicted shopping gifts for her girlfriend and kissing her

like seriously what a wack comparison

And AFAIK they're not licensed derivative adaptations either. It's work:

1. Created by Blizzard creative staff...
2. under the supervision of the Overwatch narrative guy...
3. published on Blizzard's Web site.
