126 Who doesn't ship Hamilton with, oh, Jefferson. Or Madison, who left Hamilton for Jefferson! Or Jefferson and Adams, who talked about each other on their death bed? Seriously, every time I study/teach the Federalist period, all I can think about is damn, internet grudge matches have nothing on the ol' founding fathers! (ps, check out yuletide, there's some quite good historical rps over there) But anything that makes people get into American History is a big yay in my book!

134 You don't have to like someone to not wish them ill. I'm really glad she seems to be getting help and working and getting her shit together after spending a year crying for help that was waaay too long in coming.

141 What's the matter with being a glorified cartoon? Are you one of those "animation is only for children" types? Because that's pretty tired and lame.

150 I think this is a repeat but I'll still say: good for you! Cable news has really ruined journalism in this country. It's a mess.

164 The more secrets there are about elitist cosplayers and people who don't cosplay because of elitist cosplayers, the more I wonder why anyone cosplays at all. It just seems like a horrible pit of voles, like putting yourself on "hot or not".

167 Do you feel the same way about people who ship non-canon heterosexual ships? And no, I think fandom isn't about "appreciating things for what they are" mostly because none of us can agree on what any canon "is." People like different parts of canons. Also, often all that shipping means is that you like the interaction between two characters, and given our culture, romantic relationships are given primacy over platonic ones, so it's hard to talk about someone's friend being really important to them.

170 Did he really betray Mai? I mean, he ditched her to run off with the Avatar but I'm not sure that really counts as a betrayal.

176 When you are in a small fandom, or a fan of a small pairing, you really do have a responsibility to go out and review everything and talk to people about it. The few people that actually write Rymon fics, unless they're just baffling, I review them all—and I'm lucky because since I've been in fandom the few that have been written have been really great. So boo on those people. But I don't think it's a bad thing to go back to those comments or emails begging for more and say, "I know it's been a long time, but here's more!"

@wooooah: You're doing it wrong. There are plenty of logical reasons to find her dangerous, but that sort of talk just drums up sympathy for her, and in an election this close we really can't afford that sort of thing.

170 - I do not think that breaking up with her via text message note is a betrayal, but then it has been a good few years since I was a teenager, sooo... a matter of perspective. Mai was suitably pissed at him, anyway, but still stuck up for Azula when the time came, so I am thinking that she didn't think it was a betrayal either.

Mai was totally right to be pissed at him, and he behaved like an ass absolutely, but yeah, it wasn't like he directly went against her. (And you mean stuck up for him against Azula, yeah?)

(Yep, that she picked Zuko over Azula, which is enough proof to me that Zuko didn't betray her so much as pick a really craptastic way to let Mai know he was going on his life-changing adventures.)

It's one thing to "appreciate the interaction between two characters" and reading too much into actual human beings and their relationships. There's no room for alternate interpretation in non-fiction. If all you can see is "they like/dislike/know each other (in any degree or capacity), clearly they must yearn for one another," then there is something wrong with you.

Madison didn't "leave Hamilton for Jefferson," he worked with Jefferson against Hamilton for differences of opinion in political matters. For fuck's sake, people like you who can't view anything without yaoi glasses are what make fandom, in general, look horrible.

Re: 126 & 167

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you saying that you're only talking about real people shipping? Because I'm confused. Oh, and also? Real people shipping is 95% of celebrity journalism, so I don't think fandom looks more horrible than, say, US magazine's endless search for the latest baby bump, or whether Jake and Reese are moving in together.

Now, when I said that Madison left Hamilton for Jefferson I was actually referring to their real-life friendship. Madison and Hamilton worked on the Federalist Papers together, and then Madison went against Hamilton without, at first, telling him. Hamilton found out and felt betrayed, and their friendship pretty much ended, and Hamilton was pretty heartbroken about the whole thing. I was being facetious in the context of being happy that someone got excited about American History, which is my field. Don't assume that I don't know what I'm talking about just because I don't give my cv on my LJ user page.

Also, I think you have to look at a lot more than one flippant comment on a fandom community to decide if someone "can't view anything without yaoi glasses." I mean, judgmental, much? And even if I did, I'm not sure why my manner of fandom participation is up for your approval or disapproval. Live and let live and you'll probably have a lot more fun in fandom.

Ah, the old "this other thing you didn't mention exists, so I assume you approve of it" tactic. Again. Why do slashers assume all non-slashers approve of that stuff?

Re: 126 & 167

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you non-slashers continue to reduce all fandom participation to whether or not you're a slasher?

Also, nice ignoring everything else I said because you have no answer to it.

See, the problem you have is that you can keep hating slash, and people will keep writing it, and you'll keep being annoyed. So you know, they win, here.

Different anonymoose, but as a person who isn't a slasher (and tries hard to tolerate those that go a little crazy with the whole OMG SEXY BISHI A AND SEXY BISHI B ARE TTLY LOVERS LOLOLOLOL) it gets frustrating.

I think I have as much of a right to rant as much as those who ship people constantly. I know it's not going to stop anyone, people can do what they want to do, but you know...it would be nice to just let out your dislike for something EVERYONE LOVES and maybe find some people who feel the same way.

If I held it all in I'd just end up being even more hateful towards others who I can't disagree with because I'd hurt their precious feelings.

Re: 126 & 167

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-09-22 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
In my original comment to the OP, all I'd said was whether they felt the same about non-canonical het ships, a question they never answered. Instead they attacked me for wearing "yaoi glasses" because of a comment I made about founding fathers slash and now suddenly I'm the poster girl for slashers or something.

I don't remember saying that people couldn't rant. The only thing I continue to be frustrated about is that if i don't specifically hate slash, then automatically I have yaoi glasses and I'm ruining fandom for everyone. Personally I have more fun in fandom when I concentrate on the things I like and ignore the things I don't like. Ranting almost never makes me feel better. My "precious feelings" haven't been hurt. I'm more sort of mystified that you and this other anonymouse are arguing with me about things I haven't said, and putting me in the place for all slashers when I haven't said anything that was particularly defensive of slash in these comments.

If there's anything that frustrates me, it's that I could have written 37 het stories and one slash story, and I get chucked in the bin with "those that go a little crazy" or "people with yaoi glasses." And I'm just left wondering if all of this is necessary.

Also, everyone doesn't love slash. Most fandoms are mostly made of het shippers, but slashers happen to congregate on LJ. I'm sorry you feel surrounded by slashers, but you know, maybe you need to build a different flist.

For the record, I am sorry if that I might have assumed something you're not. I really don't mean any harm towards you, my comment was towards people in general really.

My point is just that sometimes its good for some people to rant and just let it all out (isn't that what having a lj is for? I wouldn't know lol, I found this place out from a friend). It may not be your thing, but its hard for some people (lol me) to ignore certain things they see and it drives them bonkers.

It's hard being a hetro/just friends (applies to hetro too) shipper too ya know (not that you aren't, I wont assume what you ship or don't ship). I try to like yaoi and yuri but its not my thing, and I get the feeling that people are lumping me with OMG GAY BASHERS. Batshit hetro fans piss me off too (hello twilight fans) and I have friends who ship yaoi couples (I love em to death <3 so I don't want to "un friend" them), but sometimes I feel out of place and its frustrating as hell.

So if someone who wants to make a secret ranting about that (or if they're a yaoi fan that feels out of place) isn't this the right place to do it? I'm tired of seeing people who have a different opinion being told, "OMG UR IGNORANT HOW DARE U! SHIPPING IS ALL THAT MATTERS, FRIENDSHIP ISN'T TRU WOV!!!..." without thinking about being in their shoes.

ANYWAYS tl;dr: ...It really doesn't have much to to with your original comment lol, but my point is this. Some people just have different opinions and people around here should respect that.

Anyhow, I don't mean any harm to you and I'm sorry if I came across that way. No hard feelings?

I LOVE CARTOON, I JUST DON'T GET THE ANIME OBSESSION. AND THE WEEABOO THING OR WHATEVER IT'S CALLED.

Re: 126 134 141 150 164 167 170 176

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2008-09-21 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, you mean, the whole Japan yay thing? Yeah, the Weeaboo thing I don't really get, but i don't think it's any different than any other kind of silly obsession that people get, like about a band they really love, or a live-action show they're a fan of. I know I've certainly had those and hey, obsession is what fandom is all about!

Re: 126 134 141 150 164 167 170 176

(Anonymous) 2008-09-22 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
But only the things *I'm* obsessed about are *worth* being obsessed about! Only *losers* obsess over all those other things that I don't care about.
