That, or they're worried that by referring to it as a cartoon, they risk alienating others who do believe said stereotype and will therefore dismiss it out of hand.

That is true too. They can also be insecure because of that.

What stereotype? Anime are cartoons. What really bugs me is that people think the word "cartoon" is a pejorative.

The "cartoons = kiddie stuff" stereotype.

I actually get more upset when anime fans get self-righteous about me calling anime "cartoons". Most anime is aimed at the same demographic as American cartoons anyway, I mean, the majority of it is for adolescents. There are plenty of exceptions but yes, most animations is aimed at younger people because that's how the animations studios make money from toy tie-ins and the like.

(Just adding in more because this topic is lulzy and I'm avoiding schoolwork.)

Well that's not completely true as in Japan manga in particular is aimed towards every age, and in abundance. I know plenty of families where both the kids and the parents will enjoy manga. However, it is true that anime is more aimed towards children during golden hour since it is their biggest money-maker.

And vice-versa, what should we consider futurama, family-guy and the like? (we could also include adult swim in the like but it still is rather underground) Sure they are social commentaries in a comedy format and don't take on the same kind of storytelling but it is fair to say that america is also appreciating the depth of animation. Plus, we've had works like persepolis taught in schools and watchmen is by far a prime example of how cartoons/comics can be used as an adult format.

So anyone who makes that stereotype has been living in a box for the past 20 years evidently.
