And the commenters stroking their turgid hateboners over ~Tony stans~ are right on cue.

Lol, ikr? I'm like, oh wow dude you're definitely not just proving secret!anon's point or anything. Definitely not.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't have a hateboner. Don't like him but don't hate him. Don't care who does like him. Just seems like his fans are weirdly defensive of him and seem to react overly strong to the idea of anyone else not liking him.`

somebody once told me it made them distrust me that i loved Tony as a character. idk how common that level of virulent, nonsensical hatred is, but i can understand how it breeds defensiveness. especially given that, in terms of being morally gray(tm) he's in pretty good company in the mcu

My dude, fans of most polarizing characters tend to feel defensive if the segment of fandom they're involved in is loudly and vitriolically determined to inform everyone that this is the worst character ever, even worse than all those other characters who've done comparable things. Even if it means barging into what is clearly intended to be a positive conversation about that character to shit all over the fans' parade. Even if the conversation is about some other character or plot arc that's tangentially related, and they're the only ones bringing that character up.

Yep. This. Oh so much, this. There’s only so many times that you can hear, “He/She is awful, and your opinion is wrong, and here’s all the reasons why you suck, and why this character you like is the Actual Worst,” before you start to feel somewhat attacked, despite all determination to keep out of the fray. Especially when you’ve actually made attempts to curate your fandom activity to stay in character-positive spaces. Double especially when the reasoning behind this character being the Actual Worst is that he/she is not the random commenter’s favourite character and/or was once in conflict (combat or otherwise) with the random commenter’s favourite character.

That's how I feel about Bucky, and I don't even like him that much as a character. But I see people actually blaming him for things he did while brainwashed and it is just so ludicrous I end up defending a character I rarely talk about otherwise.

That is so baffling to me. Like....really? I just don't get it.

I'm a Loki fan, and while I don't seek out the haters to "reprimand" them or whatever (because I literally feel too old for that shit) I feel this comment because I. Am. Tired. Yes, I know he's often not a pleasant character...thanks for insulting my intelligence. I just want to enjoy things? I don't even like MCU Tony Stark much but I feel some sort of solidarity with his hardcore stans because of this.

I'm also not here for Loki fans who hate on other characters, especially Thor, so I'm sick of being lumped in with that shite as well.

Seconding this so hard.

I know there are Tony fans who furiously defend every single thing he's ever done and hate on other characters irrationally because they opposed him. And I'm not here for that.

But wow, the hate he gets, and the judgmental side-eyeing his fans get, feels very disproportionate to me.

It's really not though, he literally only gets hate here. Go to tumblr (literally all there is in the Endgame tag right now is just Tony stans acting losing their minds), twitter, reddit, AO3, whatever, and he's praised to hell and back. Don't let a tiny, tiny pocket of people make you think he receives any real hate because he just doesn't. And unlike Steve, he doesn't even have anti or hate fic or ships borne out of spite against him.

...No, all of those spaces are also pretty toxic if you're a Tony fan, and there are a fuckton of Tony hate fics. The only difference between those and the Steve fics is that hardcore Steve fans don't bother to tag their character bashing. Which is super fun if you're a fan of both and stumble into the wrong post-CW Steve focused fic.

Probably because it barely exists to the point of needing its own sub tag. Wish I could say Tony stans share the same restraint, but they went and made up a whole new ship out of spite, so.

I don't know what universe you live in where Tony isn't the most popular character in the MCU, but keep trying to act like you're some sort of poor oppressed group of 5 people I guess. I'm sure all the Tony praise in the Endgame tag on tumblr right now just flies right over your head.

AYRT - I saw "endgame" and "fans shitting themselves" and decided not to read any further in case of out and out spoilers. I mean, I'm 95% sure at this point that I'm spoiled anyway, but I'd rather not be 100% sure.

Maybe he gets more hate in the fandom (though I don't think so). But in the movies, he's the favorite. He's the one who always takes over the story. Everyone's story. He's always front and center. He always gets the most characterization. He always gets the most story. So fans of other characters have reason to be frustrated and annoyed with him.

I think he gets more hate, but he also definitely gets more love, too.

But in the movies, he's the favorite.

This is true. The MCU loves Tony, I won't argue that.

He's the one who always takes over the story. Everyone's story. He's always front and center.

Lots of people say this, but IMO it's not nearly that ubiquitous. The first Avengers movie felt pretty balanced to me. I don't feel he took over Age of Ultron, but I'll concede that he drew focus the most of all the characters in that one. And yes, CW was as much his movie as it was Cap's movie, so that one I'll agree to, since it was supposed to be Cap's movie. But those are the only two MCU movies I can think of where he somewhat "took over" a movie that wasn't his movie.

Beyond that, I understand being frustrated with the writers for giving Tony more focus, but I don't really understand being frustrated with him for it.

He played a major role in Spiderman Homecoming (being the driving force for both Peter AND Vulture).

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. Not liking a character isn't the same thing as hating them. It's so weird that anyone would take that so personally.
