If a spoiler ruins a movie for you, it's not a good movie.

what about a movie like the sixth sense or jordan peele's films, where the whole fun of it is the reveal(s) and how it re-casts everything we've seen before? obviously it can be fun to re-watch and see the same scenes through a new light, but plenty of good movies would be way less fun if you went in knowing the big spoilers?

Jordan Peele movies to me are more than just the reveal. Sixth Sense is not, which is why I never thought it was a good movie. I think a movie has to be rewatchable for me to consider it good. But then again, I think good is mostly subjective, this is just my personal opinion.

I'm not saying JP is just the reveal, just that the experience of both Get Out and Us is enhanced by knowing as few plot points as possible going in. (Hell, the marketing for GO barely revealed a single thing about the plot or conflict, which, IMO, made the experience of seeing the film much more fun). They probably wouldn't be ruined by spoilers, but the original experience crafted by the filmmaking team would be somewhat spoiled.

I don't know. I was spoiled for Get Out before I saw it, and I still loved it. I don't think it took anything away from the experience for me. I think this is just something where different people are different.

I think people just are different when it comes to movies. That's how it is for me. I can know the entire plot going in and still love a movie. In fact, it can increase my enjoyment because I can see details I'd miss trying to follow the plot. And I hate surprises. That being said, for some people, that first viewing and the surprise is important, and that's okay too.

I just hate the whole notion that no one should even be allowed to read spoilers and that spoilers ruin it for everyone. If I want spoilers, that's on me.

My thoughts exactly. Every great once in a while there might be something I'll try and avoid spoilers for, but for the most part, yeah, I'm fine with them, too.

I also consider the fact that sometimes when I read spoilers, I'm getting somebody's personal interpretation/bias of the characters/events (not meaning that in a negative way, either, just noting that people will view characters and situations differently sometimes). Yeah, I might know the general summary of what happens, but I also may take away something entirely different from the story that the spoilers didn't mention or missed or whatever, too. So even there, I'm still getting something potentially new out of the story, you know?

"Ruins the movie" is strong, but there are a lot of movies where experiencing the twists and turns of the plot is enjoyable and I understand why people want to experience that for themselves

tbh 95% of spoiler discussion on the Internet is just... ridiculous. Just try not to be a dick, people

No. If a spoiler ruins a movie for me, I have different viewing preferences and priorities than you do.

And also the movie wasn't that good.

NAYRT but what is with you?

What makes a movie "good"?

Re: Secrets (fandom or non fandom)/unpopular opinions

No.

You really have difficulty with the whole "other people enjoy things differently than you do" thing, don't you?

You're allowed to like things that aren't that good. Stop being so insecure about other people's opinions about the movies you watch.

I don't care about your opinions about the movies I watch. I just think anyone who thinks the only reason spoilers might shit on someone's experience is that the movie is bad is a complete moron.

a movie that makes you like it is a good movie

Usually I avoid spoilers for things I want to see because I feel compelled to respect the narrative flow.

I am now amused that coming across a certain spoiler for Endgame -- which I wasn't interested in and hadn't planned to see -- now makes me want to go see it.

It doesn't necessarily ruin the movie for me, but it gives me a different viewing experience. My second (or third, fourth, more) viewing will be with the knowledge from the movie, so I'd prefer to see it first unspoiled. As once I know anything, I will not be able to have that experience.

This, exactly.

Oh bullshit. Some movies are absolutely better going in not knowing what'll happen. The Sixth Sense is fine knowing the twist in advance, but it's on another level when you don't.

Re: Secrets (fandom or non fandom)/unpopular opinions

(Anonymous) 2019-04-27 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
What if you don't know the twist, but guess it about a third of the way through because Shyamalan isn't really that subtle if you've ever read ghost stories before?

Sixth Sense is always the go-to movie for these kind of discussions. It's testament to the film's plot building that it's final twist has remained in popular consciousnesses for 20 years.

Also, may the world never forget that the kid grew up to be motherfuckin' Sora from Kingdom Hearts.

It is funny because I think it is not a good movie precisely because the only thing of note about it is that surprise ending. And for me, if that is all a movie has, it just isn't a good movie. For me a good movie means one I want to watch more than once and a movie I'll enjoy every time I see it.

I very much disagree, and suspect we have very different ideas of what makes a movie 'good'.

Okay. So stay out of my decision to watch bad movies and not be spoiled for them.
