I find the movie interesting, but not especially compelling. It's mostly pretty to watch because of Bowie and the muppet effects. But the humans don't have very good chemistry with the muppet characters, especially Bowie who treats them like props in a music video, there are things like the fireys that are just annoying. Most of the obsessive fandom around the movie focuses on the Jareth/Sarah dynamic, which was never a ship I got behind. All in all, I always got kind of a vanity project vibe off Labyrinth. I do enjoy watching it, if I'm in the mood for that sort of thing, but I just don't connect with it that well.

Yeah, this. I only first watched this movie as an adult and I find it okay? There are bits and pieces I like, but overall it gives me way too much of that 'weird ~deep~ 80s fantasy movie' vibe but nothing of whatever it is that gets me to like other weird ~deep~ 80s fantasy movies.

Yes, Bowie was not one of the best actors to put opposite the muppets. Other performers managed to go all in on that particular bit of weirdness.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I love David Bowie to bits, but I found Labyrinth boring and cringeworthy - maybe cos I tried to watch it as an adult.

This is how it went for me too.

Same on both counts. Bowie fan since the late 70s, never a Labyrinth fan.

(He was better in Man Who Fell to Earth and Just a Gigolo, to name just two.)

It's fun. There's more than enough stuff going on there to hold my interest. It's not the best movie I ever saw. IDK.

I do think a lot of it is nostalgia. A lot of the people who really love Labyrinth are the ones who watched it when they were a similar age to Sarah. Jareth is a bit of a coming-of-age rite of passage in the minds of a lot of fans. I legitimately love a lot of the tropes it has - especially the fact that Sarah consistently has the upper hand over Jareth, whether emotionally or otherwise - but the cheesy puppet stuff would probably put me off if I went in blind, despite how much skill it clearly took.

I think it's one of those 'had to watch it in your formative years' cases. I first saw The Princess Bride last year and couldn't really see what everyone was raving about, so I assume it's the same with that.

My appreciation for it isn't really about the tropes. Labyrinth and Dark Crystal were largely original fantasy works that have some of the best puppetry and experimental choreography in cinema, almost exclusively done through physical effects. Bowie's area is just a bonus.

"Bowie's area"

Dance, magic pants.

ALL HAIL THE SACRED AREA!

Thank you for the Princess Bride mention. I haven't ever seen it, despite hot Carey Elwes. The way people rave about how awesome it is, the less inclined I am to see it.

I've never been able to finish it.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
My comment! Thank you kind anon. And I think the fact that I was 18 (I think) when I first saw it may be part of the issue here.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-28 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
For me it's mostly a nostalgia thing because I grew up on The Muppet Show and it was the start of my fascination with Bowie. I don't think I'd feel the same way if I'd only seen it as an adult.

I have never seen the film (and I was thirteen when it came out in the cinemas), I'm a Bowie fan, and I DON'T EVEN CARE.

I still thoroughly enjoy this movie, but I tried to watch The Dark Crystal as an adult and just can not get through it. People still rave about it, and I hvae fond memories, but man that is a slow long movie.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-29 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, I'm one of the ones who loves the movie, but I also acknowledge that it's freaking WEIRD AF and I can see why someone might not like it.

I don't get how someone could not like Dance, Magic, Dance, but eh. You do you. And now I have that song in my head.

Oh, I *hate* this movie. The writing is absolutely terrible, and it turns out Im not a fan of the Muppets either bc I found the puppetry annoying. I did see it twice, hoping to figure out what I was missing since its a cult classic, but I became convinced that people love it out of childhood nostalgia and for Bowie. And I love me some Bowie but he isnt worth the migraine I get when this travesty gets put on. Music's not even that good, it's low-tier Bowie.

(Anonymous) 2019-04-30 05:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It was showing in a revue theatre in Toronto and I went to see it, having fond memories of the 'YOU HAVE NO POWER OVER ME!' moment.

So...first of all, I actually forgot it was a musical. HOW? I don't know. I actually hate musicals (I know I'm in a minority).

Second: I also forgot about the codpiece, perhaps because I was too young when I originally saw it? Maybe I blocked it out? But seriously, was anyone able to NOT stare at that thing when it was onscreen? It can't possibly just be me.

I love Bowie and even remember being impressed by young Jennifer Connolly so have a soft spot for this movie, though while recognizing its many (many) flaws.
