I do think a lot of it is nostalgia. A lot of the people who really love Labyrinth are the ones who watched it when they were a similar age to Sarah. Jareth is a bit of a coming-of-age rite of passage in the minds of a lot of fans. I legitimately love a lot of the tropes it has - especially the fact that Sarah consistently has the upper hand over Jareth, whether emotionally or otherwise - but the cheesy puppet stuff would probably put me off if I went in blind, despite how much skill it clearly took.

I think it's one of those 'had to watch it in your formative years' cases. I first saw The Princess Bride last year and couldn't really see what everyone was raving about, so I assume it's the same with that.

My appreciation for it isn't really about the tropes. Labyrinth and Dark Crystal were largely original fantasy works that have some of the best puppetry and experimental choreography in cinema, almost exclusively done through physical effects. Bowie's area is just a bonus.

"Bowie's area"

Thank you for the Princess Bride mention. I haven't ever seen it, despite hot Carey Elwes. The way people rave about how awesome it is, the less inclined I am to see it.
