How exactly? This show had a lot of potential and a lot of directions it could go. The only way it's a mess is because it was cut short before getting a chance to properly build the characters/universe or finish what it started.

I thought each of the episodes were fairly self contained while simultaneously building the bigger story. Like... you can tell they were trying to do something with each of the characters but we just never got to see the payoff for anything except for River in Serenity.

I think it's kinda unfair to call it a mess without really getting a chance to take off and explore what it wanted to do completely. Shepherd is a complete mystery. We have brief glimpses that he might have a darker past but we never get to see it. Pretty sure there was more to do with Inara as well.

There is a comic that gives Book's story. I don't know if you can find it, but I was lucky enough to run across a copy.
