...I see I missed something interesting in this latest film.

The ending felt so cheap. This movie in general was disappointing to me. It all felt like wasted potential. I liked the animation a lot though.

Maybe I went on a bad day but the animation didn't work for me. It was the character-rigging moments where I became acutely aware that the animator was pushing the pose as far as they could, almost to the level of mid-century Looney Tunes.

But, your mileage may vary.

I agree with you on the ending. I liked the villain in this movie. I liked the lightfury. I liked the animation and the look of the hidden world. But the ending was disappointing. The message of the earlier movies was about fighting prejudice and working together, and this one just kind of ruined that.

Yeah, this was my problem with it. It pretty much undid everything from the first two movies, so I came away from it going "... then what even was the point?"

(Anonymous) 2019-05-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I know nothing about these movies, could someone please explain what this secret is referring to?

So, in these movies, in the first movie, the Viking village of Berk fights with dragons. The main character, Hiccup, figures out another way. So now they ride dragons and make friends with them. And Hiccup wants to teach everyone this new way. Only in the last movie, the message is that prejudice is too strong, so the dragons have to go away to a new place, their origin place, because humans can never get along with them. Which is a pretty messed up message.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-04 07:08 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! That does sound pretty messed up.

Are you on crack? The whole point of the dragons being moved to the Hidden World was to A) alleviate the extreme overcrowding problem that Hiccup's animal hoarder tendencies had created when he failed to consider any plan for the future other than bringing home more and more dragons, B) throw off some of the enemies he and Berk had collected *because* of his dragon liberation plans, C) free the dragons from having to fight Berk's battles for it and enable them to live their own lives, D) protect the last dregs of the Night/Light Fury species from a lunatic trophy hunter who was dedicated to wiping out their species.

The dragons were set free to live in peace on a hidden nature preserve until mankind was mature enough to live alongside them in peace without trying to kill them off or use them to fight wars with, not made to go hide away forever because humans can never get along with them.

I think that's what they were trying for, but I don't think that's what came across onscreen. I don't think having the dragons go away was the right choice.

Right there with you, OP. There were a lot of aspects of the movie I liked, but the ending felt like a really cynical attempt at manufacturing a tearjerker moment, not to mention that it's kind of a slap in the face to the Netflix series. The writers of Race to the Edge obviously put a lot of effort into making sure the show aligned with the canon of the first two movies, but there's no way for it to fit into Hidden World's canon. Like, I didn't expect the movie to acknowledge the show in any way, but I also didn't expect it to basically shit all over it, either, you know? But I digress.

I mean, yeah, having all of the dragons (in the WHOLE ENTIRE WORLD, INCLUDING THEIR BONES APPARENTLY) disappear is true to the books, but it's not like they cared that much about staying true to them before, so why start now? It's just so stupid. I suppose I should admit to being a little biased, though, because Hiccup and Toothless' goodbye scene gave me major flashbacks to when my horse and best friend Sharif died last year. There were a lot of parallels between their goodbye and mine, with the obvious differences being that Toothless lived and they got to see each other again later on... Anyway, I was a wreck for the rest of the night over it, and so I admit that part of my dislike of the ending comes from being pissed that it stirred up all of those painful memories in me. The majority of my dislike, however, comes from the fact that it's a bad ending to a great series.

Tl;dr: I agree with the OP that the ending of HTTYD3 sucked and also I miss my horse.

Totally agree with this. I was thinking the whole Berkian group would go with the dragons into some alt-universe type, since we saw the Lightfury blasting holes in time/space.

BUT NO.
