Women just strip in front of each other or in front of gay men. Yeah, no. Not a lot of us do that. I trust my best friend more than anyone else in this world but he and I have never seen each other naked even though he's gay. Like, what the hell? Even if gay men don't find my body appealing I'm still uncomfortable showing off my body to other people. Same goes for my girlfriends. Some of us have more boundaries than others. It's not just "I'm comfortable being naked in front of everyone" or "I'm uncomfortable being naked in front of everyone".

Oh, man, yes. I luff my BFF more than almost anyone in the world, but when she came to stay here, she shut the door to the spare room to change, or changed in the bathroom, and same for me. And I've been naked (in the lake) at pagan gatherings! It's all down to the person and the situation.

And hello - maybe a gay man isn't comfortable having a woman strip down in front of him. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he's fine with people being naked around him.

And funny how they never have men stripping down in front of lesbians......

Yeah, I have one female friend with whom it's like, "Ok, take your top off and show me this nipple ring you were talking about," or, "Is this see-through bra and thong combo flattering?" but I have another who I've never even seen her in her bra. And I regulate my behavior accordingly, too. I mean, I don't mind if the more private friend sees me unclothed, but I assume she's more comfortable not seeing me unclothed, and I respect that.

I'm also not suuuper comfortable with my own body. But I find it kind of freeing and cathartic to be around women who do not give a fuck about being seen naked, so when I'm around women like that I tend to feel a lot more able to get into that mindset myself.

Wait, other women DON'T strip in front of each other? I mean, maybe my experience has been colored by the fact that most of my friends are congoers who cosplay, but we have never thought twice about getting dressed or undressed in front of each other. When you are sharing a room with four other people and all of you are trying to get dressed for the day, you just sort of... stop caring about that.

Yeah, there's no way I'm stripping in front of anyone, regardless of their gender/sexuality.

What? What about locker rooms? I used to go to the public swimming pool all the time and the locker room was full of women who were strangers getting naked in front of each other and using the communal showers together naked. And at least half the slumber parties I went to, we all changed in front of each other, and always if we were close friends.

I think anything to do with nudity depends on where you live, anon. Don't act like where you live is everywhere. (And don't anyone else chime in with "Yeah, anon is being US-centric": I'm from the US, too).

I understand that different communities and peoples have different levels of culture, but that's exactly my point. IRL Most individuals have certain levels of intimacy with their peers. I am comfortable being naked in front of my sister, but depending on the situation and people involved there are varying degrees in which I can just change in front of people (like at a gym I visit often) to where I want to change in a private area by myself (like in front of my mom because I hate the way she always has to make a comment about my body). However, in media it's generally depicted that women either strut around nude in front of each other just so the film can have shots if pretty naked women or they depict the stereotypes of gay men with cis women. Like a guy says "I'm gay!" Suddenly the suspicious woman is completely comfortable taking her clothes off because she doesn't have to worry that he won't feel turned on by her. IRL I can't just assume that because someone I know is gay they will be comfortable that I am taking my clothes off in front of them. We have to establish a level of comfort with each other first.

SA Sorry if it's rambling and there's poor grammar. I wrote that on my phone and I'm a little inebriated.

Yeah, I'm from the US too and in my school we had locker rooms where we all changed for sports. I thought that was the norm? I mean, how else do people change for PE class?

I'm in Canada and at my school the locker rooms also had privacy stalls. So you could change out in the open if you wanted, but you could also change in private. It was up to you.

The schools I attended had bathroom stalls that girls changed into. Some of us even put up makeshift guards at a corner and take turns changing behind the guard (like putting up jackets or a bath towel).

... damn, how many stalls did your bathrooms have to make that feasible? Ours only had three.

People don't tend to get completely nude when changing for gym.

Locker rooms and public showers tend to be their own thing - there's an unspoken rule about focusing on changing/washing yourself and not looking at/acknowledging anyone else's nudity that doesn't exist in a lot of other settings. I know a lot of people who wouldn't think twice about whipping their shirt off in a locker room to change, but would seek privacy if, say, they had to change at friend's house because they spilled something, even if the people present were the same in both scenarios.
