Whhhhhhyyy

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-05-04 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
do they always have women in tv shows/in movies who throw up just sort of lean down over a toilet or the ground and be sick? As a person with long hair, even if you're struggling to get to the toilet in time, you GRAB THAT MESS and hold it back. Bad enough if you get vomit in your hair, but if you draggle it down into the toilet, too.....?
*shudders*

What are your 'whhhhhhys' for nit-picky tv/movie stuff? Especially if you are/do/have the 'thing' (like long hair), and they always treat it wrong or weird.

When I had long hair sometimes even eating without getting food all up in my hair was a challenge. But then again, I had super thick hair. Is this sort of thing also an issue for people with thinner hair?

HA. I have gotten my own hair in my mouth while eating if I moved around to fast or if it was outside and on a windy day, etc. It get caught in drawers and in doors and in the windows of my car.

I have 'middle of the road' hair - not super thick, not thin - and mostly straight unless it's really humid. I had my windows down in my car, and closed them up before i got out, and my hair had blown back and was caught in the *back seat* window, which i had to open before i could move. I love my hair, but it can be a pain sometimes.

I have extremely fine long hair and I can't say I've ever had a problem with getting food in it. But if it's windy I can't wear lipgloss because my hair it will stick to my mouth like crazy.

I think this is a side-effect of most prominent screenwriters being men, tbh. Long hair on men is making a comeback but is still nowhere near the norm; hence they probably never think about a detail which would be plain as day for us.

I feel the same whenever a crime drama shows a woman panicking about how to get blood out of fabric (presumably after she's murdered someone). I mean for fuck's sake, what woman hasn't had to wash blood out of sheets before?? XD

HA, right? Jeez, it's a skill we all learn early, even if we refuse to do it (see - my daughter).

I also hate the 'women walking through dark car park, no keys in hand, fumbles for keys in huge, stuffed bag after hearing weird noise'. I don't know a single woman who doesn't walk out of the house/shop/office/whatever with her keys already in her hand, ready to go.

Eh, I wouldn't even say it's just men? I'm a woman who has always had short hair and the idea of pulling your hair back while puking is completely foreign to me because I've never had enough hair TO pull back. Like, it literally hadn't even occurred to me until I read this thread because it just isn't an issue for me.

Women just strip in front of each other or in front of gay men. Yeah, no. Not a lot of us do that. I trust my best friend more than anyone else in this world but he and I have never seen each other naked even though he's gay. Like, what the hell? Even if gay men don't find my body appealing I'm still uncomfortable showing off my body to other people. Same goes for my girlfriends. Some of us have more boundaries than others. It's not just "I'm comfortable being naked in front of everyone" or "I'm uncomfortable being naked in front of everyone".

Oh, man, yes. I luff my BFF more than almost anyone in the world, but when she came to stay here, she shut the door to the spare room to change, or changed in the bathroom, and same for me. And I've been naked (in the lake) at pagan gatherings! It's all down to the person and the situation.

And hello - maybe a gay man isn't comfortable having a woman strip down in front of him. Just because he's gay doesn't mean he's fine with people being naked around him.

And funny how they never have men stripping down in front of lesbians......

Re: Whhhhhhyyy

Yeah, I have one female friend with whom it's like, "Ok, take your top off and show me this nipple ring you were talking about," or, "Is this see-through bra and thong combo flattering?" but I have another who I've never even seen her in her bra. And I regulate my behavior accordingly, too. I mean, I don't mind if the more private friend sees me unclothed, but I assume she's more comfortable not seeing me unclothed, and I respect that.

I'm also not suuuper comfortable with my own body. But I find it kind of freeing and cathartic to be around women who do not give a fuck about being seen naked, so when I'm around women like that I tend to feel a lot more able to get into that mindset myself.

Re: Whhhhhhyyy

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, other women DON'T strip in front of each other? I mean, maybe my experience has been colored by the fact that most of my friends are congoers who cosplay, but we have never thought twice about getting dressed or undressed in front of each other. When you are sharing a room with four other people and all of you are trying to get dressed for the day, you just sort of... stop caring about that.

Yeah, there's no way I'm stripping in front of anyone, regardless of their gender/sexuality.

Re: Whhhhhhyyy

What? What about locker rooms? I used to go to the public swimming pool all the time and the locker room was full of women who were strangers getting naked in front of each other and using the communal showers together naked. And at least half the slumber parties I went to, we all changed in front of each other, and always if we were close friends.

I think anything to do with nudity depends on where you live, anon. Don't act like where you live is everywhere. (And don't anyone else chime in with "Yeah, anon is being US-centric": I'm from the US, too).

OMG, YES, THIS.

As someone whose stomach gets upset at like even thinking wrong things, let alone eating and/or drinking, and who has done her share of throwing up, it always takes me out of the movie/show when women do that, I've literally never done it, even when I had barely enough time to make it to the toilet. It's just like... but you're only making the whole thing so much worse by basically plunging your entire head and hair into the toilet???

Right? It grosses me out so much. That and when someone just threw up (at home) and they don't even rinse their mouth. If i get sick, i always brush right after. When i was at the hospital, I rinsed my mouth and got a drink, until I could brush. Just - jeez, at least do that.

why do people in movies or TV shows always wave matches out instead of blowing them out? they have a tendency to not go out all the way if you don't blow them out, and I once saw a live show where the damn match kept relighting because of that. the actor had a long, very serious monologue and his damn match wouldn't go out (he had just lit a cigarette) and it was distracting enough that I had to try really hard to keep from laughing.

Re: Whhhhhhyyy

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-05-04 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Heee! Wow, that must have been frustrating for them.

I guess it depends on what i'm doing, i usually blow a match out, though i've done the wave thing once or twice. But then I'm generally going to run the thing under water, too, so.....

Re: Whhhhhhyyy

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I never noticed that. I wave my matches out, although if they don't go out after a couple flicks I blow it out or throw it into a cup of water since I always put matches into water if I can.
I would guess that when shooting a movie or show the gesture of waving it out is easier to do take after take rather than blowing it out.

Haha, this gets me too. When I've been with female friends who were feeling sick I've always immediately pulled their hair back and been all "I'VE GOT YOUR HAIR DON'T WORRY GO GO GO"

And it's so delicate/quiet when it's women in TV, like a little cough/spit or two. People make ungodly noises while puking in real life. Like from the seventh circle of hell.

I hate it when they show women sleeping and they're clearly wearing a bra and makeup, sometimes even with their hair done.

Scenes where people are passed out or unconscious for extended without messy bodily functions.

Hospital bed scenes without monitors, IV, rails, or any other messy stuff. Similarly, people doing lab work without eye and face protection.

I don't know anyone that vomits in the toilet, then sits on the floor when finished and LEANS AGAINST THE TOILET OR PUTS THEIR HANDS ON THE TOILET SEAT. I also personally don't pick up the toilet seat to puke with my bare hands- I use a square of toilet paper.
