why do people in movies or TV shows always wave matches out instead of blowing them out? they have a tendency to not go out all the way if you don't blow them out, and I once saw a live show where the damn match kept relighting because of that. the actor had a long, very serious monologue and his damn match wouldn't go out (he had just lit a cigarette) and it was distracting enough that I had to try really hard to keep from laughing.

Heee! Wow, that must have been frustrating for them.

I guess it depends on what i'm doing, i usually blow a match out, though i've done the wave thing once or twice. But then I'm generally going to run the thing under water, too, so.....

I never noticed that. I wave my matches out, although if they don't go out after a couple flicks I blow it out or throw it into a cup of water since I always put matches into water if I can.
I would guess that when shooting a movie or show the gesture of waving it out is easier to do take after take rather than blowing it out.

that wouldn't explain why they do it in cartoons

Not an artist so I have ask, would it be easier to animate? Or it doesn't matter?

um, cartoons don't do retakes the way film would.

AYRT I mean to say just to animate the arm waving a match is that easier to animate than to animate blowing out a match? Are they equally easy/difficult to animate so it wouldn't matter either way? Because if it is the case of the latter, maybe the animators prefer to animate the arm waving for whatever reason.

I know people who work in animation and blowing wouldn't be any harder to animate.
