(Anonymous) 2008-09-23 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)And John Sheppard (quoter of The Fantastic Four, Star Wars, Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy to name but three) is not a geekboy why? Because you think he's hot?
Also? Rodney McKay is not chubby. He's not skinny. But he's not chubby, either. He's kinda ... normal. (With very hot arms - that boy's been working out.) And people like you are a large part of the reason why so many celebrities starve themselves to be thin. Because if they're not a rake, (or ripped if they're a guy), then they're fat, apparently. Wow. Way to turn a sliding scale into a binary option.
135. Yeah, because ALL American writers get it right in British fandoms and are never in need of a Britpicker. *rolls eyes*

(Anonymous) 2008-09-23 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)(No noteworthy flaws? McKay?)
Self-insertion is a literary device in which the real author of a work of fiction appears as a character within that fiction, either overtly or in disguise. Some characters have been described as unintentional self-inserts, implying that their author is unconsciously using them as an author surrogate.
The difference is that a Mary Sue is a pretty, pretty, perfect, sparkly princess who wins hearts and minds and does everything quicker and better and more AWESOMELY than everyone else. A self-insert is the author (mostly) knowing that they're putting themselves in there. The writers of SGA are aware of how much of them they put into McKay. They talk about it, ffs. He's not a sparkly Gary Stu, he's the stumbling, socially inept genius (and PLEASE, could they just let him retain some character development for once) that they all think they are.

(Anonymous) 2008-09-25 12:05 am (UTC)(link)He is a pretty pretty princess because no one cares that he's a shithead.
The writers should get some kind of credit for being aware that they favor Rodney because he is them? Why?
Re: 105, 135
and gorgeous, yow; I kind of cringe nowadays when I see fic that emphasizes his 'doughy middle' or something. I know he buffed up for the wedding and all that, and early McKay does have some of the soft middle, but... not so much anymore. Thanks for the rant. 'Thanks for turning a sliding scale into a binary option' is my new favorite phrase!
135: While I get what you're saying, here, the thing is that there are countless communities for britpicking and I don't know very many for US fandoms. It just feels hypocritical sometimes, not that there aren't people getting it wrong on both sides of the ocean. It's one of those things, though, where if someone points it out US > UK, everyone's like 'GOD, I KNOW, GET THE BRITISHISMS RIGHT, UGH' but if people complain about UK > US it's all 'YOU GET IT WRONG, TOO, YOU KNOW.'
Re: 105, 135
(Anonymous) 2008-09-24 07:35 am (UTC)(link)Re 135: Actually, as someone from the UK writing mainly in US fandoms I've felt a lot of pressure not just to get the Americanisms right, but also to use American spelling. There may not be as many communities dedicated to it, but there's a hell of a lot more Americans and there are expectations that it will be done their way. Of course, there are people on both sides who don't give a flying fuck and that's fair enough. I always get an American beta to check me over and if I can't find one, I ask readers to point out errors, then change them. I'm far from the only one of my kind.
Re: 105, 135
In the end, the compromise most of us came to is that when it came to interjections, real world terms, and the like, we used the British terms (lift, flat, 'in hospital'), and when it came to words that were the same except for the spelling (and here, my examples are fucked, because after five years of writing in HP I literally can't remember which is which anymore! LOL. prophecy/prophesy, defense/defence, color/colour).
Unfortunately, if you're writing for a television or movie fandom, you don't have that extra layer of 'moral ground' to fall back on, but honestly, if the people you're writing about look and sound like Americans, and they're using American terms for the most part, it doesn't matter if in your head they say 'shed-ule' instead of 'sked-ule,' and the way they spell color doesn't matter a good god-damn. The people nitpicking about that aspect have as much validity as the people who decide that 'dick' is a terrible word to use in porn, and it pulls them right out of it, so no one should ever use it. Well fine, that's your opinion, sir or madam, but I'm not going to change the way I write just to satisfy that... Bottom line (no pun intended), their issues are just conflated with language, so they look like they have a point, when really they're just trying to be controlling.
It's MUCH more jarring, imo, if I'm reading a story that uses US spelling on SOME of the words, but not all.
