Learn the difference between a Mary Sue and a self-insert.

Um...

Mary Sue, sometimes shortened simply to Sue, is a pejorative term used to describe a fictional character who plays a major role in the plot and is particularly characterized by overly idealized and clichéd mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as wish-fulfillment fantasies for their authors.

(No noteworthy flaws? McKay?)

Self-insertion is a literary device in which the real author of a work of fiction appears as a character within that fiction, either overtly or in disguise. Some characters have been described as unintentional self-inserts, implying that their author is unconsciously using them as an author surrogate.

The difference is that a Mary Sue is a pretty, pretty, perfect, sparkly princess who wins hearts and minds and does everything quicker and better and more AWESOMELY than everyone else. A self-insert is the author (mostly) knowing that they're putting themselves in there. The writers of SGA are aware of how much of them they put into McKay. They talk about it, ffs. He's not a sparkly Gary Stu, he's the stumbling, socially inept genius (and PLEASE, could they just let him retain some character development for once) that they all think they are.

The ugly, balding, overweight, melodramatic, hypochondriac manchild self-insert/marysue (the tiny difference is irrelevant - it's lazy, obnoxious, ridiculous writing and the fact that fandom loves it is disgusting) who gets to have amazing adventures on a military team, have friends, have (the ONLY) romances on the show despite being a total asshole.

He is a pretty pretty princess because no one cares that he's a shithead.

The writers should get some kind of credit for being aware that they favor Rodney because he is them? Why?
