...........so, basically, like, normal ships except with knotting and self-lubricating assholes.......?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It sounds more like having ships that aren’t top/bottom dynamics entrenched in weird biology.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
...so what part of this is not a normal ship, again?

I'm still not entirely sure what the whole a/b/o thing even is, all i know is that it is incredibly divisive.
*insert "and at this point I'm scared to find out" meme*

Way to take the fun out of googling.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
From the perspective of someone who finds the entire concept highly disturbing (and I pass no judgment on anyone who likes it - you do you and I'll do me and as long as a/b/o fic is properly tagged like every other kind of fic I have no issue with it being widely available for consumption) - A/B/O involves social dynamics based on the (false) idea of wolf pack dynamics. Namely, the presence of alpha, beta, omega males. A/B/O fic tends to include but is not limited to the following: uncontrollable heat (as in "My dog is in heat and needs to fuck" kind of heat, just in case that wasn't clear), strict social hierarchies involving specific roles assigned to alphas/betas/omegas (dominant and submissive, both in and out of the actual sex), mpreg, canine physical qualities (see dick knotting, which involves the penis swelling so that it cannot be removed), self-lubricating assholes, and mpreg.

What am I missing, FS?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just given up on finding a version I won't end up hating because of the rampant, often untagged m-preg. I would be vaguely interested in some of the dynamics just for the smut but I hate m-preg with a burning passion and you never know if the fic will include it, even if it's not tagged. ABO writers are genuinely one of the shittiest people when it comes to proper, consistent tagging (right up there with "reader"insert writers).

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This is my issue, too. I think the dynamics can be interesting, but I just can't take ass-babies seriously.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe the fandoms I'm in have a different tagging culture but I've yet to find one with untagged m-preg that doesn't warn that spoilers aren't tagged or similar. I've also seen plenty tagged "no m-preg" which I appreciate.

I'm sorry that's been your experience though.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding this entire comment.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So. Much. Mpreg. I almost wouldn't mind the rest of it - wait, that's a lie. I would mind the rest of it. But the surprise mpreg takes what I find unpleasant to begin with and makes it a thousand times worse. Babies Ever After is bad enough. Creepy power dynamics are bad enough. Adding the ass-babies just - why.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm surprised at how popular this remains to be given the current fandom culture of shitting on anything that comes across as even slightly problematic.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Every popular thing gets hype backlash, doesn't chang that Endgame, a mega sequel backed by the biggest player in the entertainment industry, will almost definitely become the highest grossing movie of all time.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Lol sorry I replied from flatview. Disregard.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
For a second there I thought you meant Endgame had A/B/O. I had not heard THAT spoiler! haha.

I find good tagging and self-awareness about content (tagging and warning that your fic is dark and it's got some stuff you don't think is okay but it's fiction) attract less SJW types. The reasonable people just like knowing so they can avoid things they don't want to read.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-06 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
That always kind of surprised me too. I mean, I loathe a/b/o but so long as it’s properly tagged, I can avoid it and let other fans enjoy as they will. But I always expect it to be singled out for skewering by purity culture fanatics and somehow it never is...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:16 pm (UTC)(link)
PSA: even if O/O and A/A aren't common AO3 tags yet last time I checked anyway, there is the tag "Non-Traditional Alpha/Beta/Omega Dynamics" if this is relevant to anyone's interests.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Is it the "us against society" mentality, or is it the unusual sex organs? Genuinely curious, lol. Maybe the combination of those two?

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember reading one where it was a big cultural taboo to be attracted to your own "gender" which was interesting. It reminded me a bit of M/M or F/F historical fiction, except in this story those were acceptable and O/O and A/A were not. There was an added element of biological drives vs. conscious arousal.

I think A/O bores me because it reads like M/F which I'm meh about. An M/M or F/F pairing that are O/O or A/A tends to be more complex than the old "insert tab A into slot O" plot.

I'm a sucker for all fics with a premise of someone wanting something they're told they shouldn't want.

You do you, Anon. I find most A/B/O stuff really...hard to read, as it involves way too much 'oh, you know Omegas are all frail, weepy, soft little things!!' and 'oh, Alphas are all uncontrollable lust/rage beasts/lords of the manor!!'

No fun.

Silentwalrus wrote the very best fucking A/B/O Steve/Bucky fic *ever*,and I'll go with that for my A/B/O any day. Hilarious, different, really good.

Yeah, there IS the occasional loveable unicorn ABO fic out there, but no way am I going searching for it. So not worth the pain.
