You can do a basic first-aid and CPR course in a fairly short amount of time.

When to call an ambulance and what to do before the ambulance gets there pretty much. You'll receive instructions over the phone, but it would be scary to give someone chest compressions if you've never even done it on a dummy or watched a good demonstration. At least if you've had that training then you can feel you've done the best you can for that person.

In my country - not sure about others - it's mandatory to do a CPR course if you want to get your driver's license. I actually think all drivers should have to go to one every 10 years or so.
