Yes...it's not impressive if a grown man can only cook eggs.

YES. The bar is so low for men that we're supposed to be impressed they can scramble an egg? Any idiot can scramble an egg.

Knowing how to do basic household chores. Like washing clothes (the instructions are basically written in the clothes and everyone with the basic ability to google stuff can find out what the more obscure looking symbols mean), cleaning the most common surfaces and the likes. "I don't know how" is a really bad excuse to not do any chores. There are detailed tutorial videos for just about everything you may need to do when it comes to chores.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think not "knowing how" is the underlying issue when it comes people not doing chores like laundry and cleaning.

Re: What’s a skill that everyone should have?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
nayrt - Agreed. People clearly just don't want to clean up after themselves and they'd rather live in squalor or preferably have someone else do it for them.

Re: What’s a skill that everyone should have?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There genuinely are people who don't know how but - and that's the main issue imo, also don't WANT to know. I knew several people in college, both male and female, who had never done their own laundry even once in their lives and then made a big song and dance about their ineptitude instead of... just looking it up real quick.

There are absolutely also people who simply use "not knowing" as a lazy-ass excuse. Like men in a relationship refusing to do chores because they "never learned how to do it" and just "don't know how, it's not their fault" - no, you're just too macho to do it and yes, it very much is your fault. You're able to look up how things you are interested in work, you can bloody well look up how the washing machine works.

You can do a basic first-aid and CPR course in a fairly short amount of time.

When to call an ambulance and what to do before the ambulance gets there pretty much. You'll receive instructions over the phone, but it would be scary to give someone chest compressions if you've never even done it on a dummy or watched a good demonstration. At least if you've had that training then you can feel you've done the best you can for that person.

In my country - not sure about others - it's mandatory to do a CPR course if you want to get your driver's license. I actually think all drivers should have to go to one every 10 years or so.

Drawing a cat. Or some other animal. Some people claim that they can't draw but the thing is they can. They just need to look up a basic lesson.

Some people genuinely don't have the hand-eye coordination to draw anything remotely recognizable, and no amount of looking up lessons will change that.

You just need to be able to draw triangles and circles and a few lines instrategic places. I mean no one has to. Not being able to draw even a cartoonish animal just seems sad.

Basic cleaning skills. Basic cooking skills. I mean, making a steak is as easy as making an egg, just google, read, and do.
Sewing on a button and fixing a torn hem or patching a small hole.
Checking the air in your tires and inflating them if need be, checking the oil and transmission fluid in your car and adding some if need be.
Pumping gas.
Opening a bank account.
Basic budget/keeping track of your money stuff.
Basic first aid and when/how to call 911.

Proper hygiene, and 'common sense' things that people don't talk about because it's supposed to be obvious, or too embarrassing. Once you look it up you know, but you have to know to look it up first.
