Puritanical fandom can be blamed for plenty, but I don't think I'd blame it for this. I think, for the most part, there aren't a lot of one night stand fics because that's just not what the majority of fandom wants to read and write, the majority of the time. I mean, it's certainly no secret that shipping is...kind of a huge driving force behind a lot of fandom. And for the most part, one night stands just aren't very shippy. Unless you end the fic with them kind of falling for each other and wanting to see each other again - but then it's not so much a one night stand fic as an alternate meeting hookup fic. *shrugs*

I'm not saying no one has ever been kink shamed for writing a one night stand fic. But I don't think shaming and/or fear of shaming accounts for the lack of such fic.

I can see both sides.

On one hand, you're right, fandom has always gravitated more to romance and shipfic than PWP in general.

On the other hand, there is a marked decrease in hardcore kink/smut fic, and I absolutely think it's because people are keeping those fics to themselves or their small group of trusted friends rather than putting them out there for general consumption and inevitable harassment by the purity brigade.

+1. I'm not about to sit here and try to explain (for example) consensual nonconsent to these squawking idiots that think anything other than married missionary sex is abuse. Frankly, I write great kink, but I only share it with the people I know won't freak out on me because I've ridden that rollercoaster before and no thanks.

Is this a tumblr thing? I just- I haven't ever seen anything close to this level of purity wank in the comments on AO3, and I tend to read the comments sections very frequently. This isn't my passive-aggressive way of saying this never happened to you. I just genuinely am curious about this.

Used to be tumblr, has definitely moved over to twitter in the grand exodus. I'm being a little hyperbolic, but honestly not that much; it's less in the way of comments on fic and more in the spreading of bad or misleading information and leading attacks on the authors/artists themselves. If you've ever seen authors/artists lock down their twitters and turn off DMs and such, that's generally why.

Ah, ok. In that case, I bow to your superior knowledge of how that part of fandom works. I'm one of those hermit fans who is very, very into fanfic, but not super into the social side of fandom. AO3 is home for me, largely. I visit tumblr, but don't really get involved there, and twitter is foreign territory.

I can definitely believe that twitter brings out the purity wank, though. Sorry you have to deal with that. :/

I'm not someone who jumps around to a lot of fandoms at a time; I've only really spent much time (SO. MUCH. TIME.) in two fandoms over the past several years. But I can say that in those two fandoms, this hasn't been my experience. The smut in those fandoms has been varied, and plenty kinky. In fact, the most straight-laced, non-kinky fandom I've ever been in, by far, was a fandom that saw its heyday in the late 90s. (I was in it in the late 00s, and it was still straight-laced as fuck then.) However, I acknowledge that you may well be entirely right about other fandoms I have no experience with. Some fandoms definitely have a stronger puritanical streak than others, that much is clear.

Like lots of PWPs? Can you please please please share which fandoms these are??

Teen Wolf has a lot. So does MCU.

I spent 7 years in the BBC Sherlock fandom, and I never ran out of fic to read, and the variety was tremendous. Whatever kink you want, there's probably a bunch of it (and not for lack of purity wank, either).

More recently I've been into Peter/Tony. There are many antis, and they gnash their teeth on tumblr, but the people writing for this pairing must not give a fuck, because they post it anyway, and the kinky:non-kinky ratio is high.

The funniest part is when those puritanical babies come barging into the few kinkmemes that are still active and demand everything that doesn't fit their fragile vanilla sensibilities deleted asap.
Honey, which part of the term KINKmeme do you not understand?

oh I totally have been kinkshamed for writing one night stand fic. I wrote a pwp where one half of fandom's juggernaut had mindblowing but emotionless one-off sex with a different person (in a world where he was not in some kind of relationship with the other half of the juggernaut) and I got so much flak for it that I had to report a couple of people to the abuse team. fans of the juggernaut pairing wanted to flay me for implying that Character would have sex with anyone else, let alone sex for fun. this was in the past calendar year, no less.

there's a lot of kudos on it but they're all anonymous, go fig.

Ok, THIS I can absolutely believe. What I was questioning was the idea that it's the puritanical crowd shaming people for their one night stand fics.

OTOH, I have no doubt that disgruntled asshat shippers would take issue with fics (literally any fics) that "break up" their OTP. Just not for puritanical reasons.

Though I guess if they're trying to make their objections seem more legitimate by claiming it's about "sexual morals," then I can see why one might call that purity wank.
