From the reviews I read, I suspect showrunners are phoning it in because they're looking at the spin-offs, and making Martin look good when he finally delivers his conclusion.

Sorry, but that makes no sense. Why would a person intentionally sabotage a multi-million dollar project that their name is prominently attached to in the service of making someone else look good?

Because it would cost even more money to do it right, and the producers have a funding mandate to wrap everything because the money is moving to other projects.

Throwing away audience goodwill right before the end is in no way a sound business decision when you have more properties from the same franchise coming down the pipe. Also, the creatives involved would be sabotaging their own careers. From the success of Thrones, D&D got tapped for bonkers stuff like Star Wars, and looking at what Disney did with Trevorrow, shitting the bed creatively is a definite cause for getting the boot.
