Ok, so this is exactly what I have a problem with. Yes, he did save all of them (more than one even). But is there any panel that shows that he actually cares for them? As you said, he's a trickster, a liar. Sure, maybe he can't show his feelings, because the experiments fucked him up good, but I really don't remember anything that clearly got across: I care for them! I save them because they are important to me, not because they could be useful soon!

The fact that he's working for the Vongola in exchange for a pardon for Chikusa and Ken from the Vendicare is an indication that he does care for them. You can say that "oh, he's just using them in some grand scheme to get closer to Tsuna's body", but Tsuna himself knew that wasn't the reason. That is a telling sign that Mukuro had changed in some degree since that fight with Tsuna. Another clue that he cares for his gang, although this is more exclusively towards Chrome is when he fought Glo Xinia. Glo asked Mukuro if Chrome was precious to him, which he reacted to and it spurred Glo on to try to kill Chrome. Also when it came to Mukuro and Chrome to synchronize their thoughts to unleash Chrome's illusory power, they thought of the same thing, which is the bond they believe that exists in the Kokuyou Gang. This isn't baseless spectulation. Mukuro seems to want to keep a certain persona to others (and perhaps to himself) but gets called on his bluff on it several times (Glo Xinia, Byakuran and Tsuna). I don't think Mukuro is a benevolent person, but he isn't an evil one either. Mukuro is more than an opportunistic person, especially after the Kokuyou Arc (which can be argued that his behavior started to change between that fight and the Vongola 77 novel, which he actually tried to possess Tsuna but failed to do so because their minds were too different, making it pretty much a lost cause).

Quiet but not shy, I agree with that. And again, apart from the scene where she is being ignored from the Kokuyou gang, because she isn't Mukuro, and she looks vaguely upset, there is nothing to that. She fights, no word on her reasoning, she doesn't talk.

If you found no reasoning with her actions, then you weren't paying much attention. Chrome fights for Mukuro. She wants to make him proud of her and for him consider herself useful because he saved her. In some ways, her loyalty to Mukuro isn't that different from Gokudera's loyalty to Tsuna. And yes, Ken and Chikusa didn't treat her well at first because she wasn't Mukuro, but she still consider them friends (and probably gotten closer to them judging on her attitude of them not being there in the future and her strong belief in the bond she had with the Kokuyou). You need to look back for the Glo Xinia fight for that.

Well, I disagree they only like them with the "idea" of them. Amano had put their personalities out there, especially Mukuro's. It's easy to give a character personality and you don't need character development for that (see nearly every comedy title ever). Amano flesh them out enough for people to be interested in them or even like/love them. Whether, you like it or not, is up to you. To be honest, I didn't join the fandom until the Future Arc so this is stuff I can upon by myself so no fandom influence there.
