...Did Harry move to Essex and get an Essex special fake tan? Wtf?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I take it you missed all the “Harry Potter is Indian” headcanons floating around?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Apparently! Wtf. That makes no sense.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not expressly contradicted by the books and a lot of people find it cool and interesting so

*shrug*

not 2 be rude but the idea that somebody is sitting around wondering what it is they don't like about this pairing in 2019 is just. oof.

Why?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there a time limit on ships and ship speculation? People have been thinking about Kirk/Spock for over half a century. And while the secret poster could have read their first Draco/Harry fic in, like, 2000, and been thinking about this since then, they also could have watched the movies or read the books last month and then gone looking for fic.

Re: Why?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconding this. There's no expiration date on when people can get into a new fandom or pairing without being "lame" or whatever. There are plenty of massive pairings out there that I'm aware of, have never really gotten fannish about, but have always thought, "Maybe someday the stars will align and that pairing will just click for me and suddenly I'll be like "now I love it!"

Personally I love when people get into a fandom very late in the game, and I get to see all their opinions and ponderings, and some of them are opinions and ponderings I had when I first got into the fandom six, eight, ten years ago. I find it delightful.

I sort of get where AYRT is coming from, because Draco/Harry just don't seem interesting enough as a pairing to sustain that level of interest? I know that's just me but still

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
OP
Just last week I read a drarry fic that a tumblr recced even though I have't been in that fandom for years. And finally was able to articulate why I don't like the pairing. Don't worry about me, anon. It hasn't been haunting me. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

What new ships are there to get into? Yawn.

I think it’s a consequence of opposites-attract shipping. Draco is the Bad Boy, so he gets to snark. By opposition, Harry becomes the Good Boy, so he can’t snark because snarking is Bad.

See also: Persona 5. Joker is chaotic, flamboyant, leads from the front, and swings between charismatic and hilariously awkward. When he’s shipped with Makoto, fics play up her calm, disciplined chessmaster side, and ignore the parts where she’s also hilariously awkward. (Cop and Robber, one of the better Joker/Makoto fics, plays up both Makoto’s awkwardness and Joker’s refusal to admit when he’s in over his head, so they’re different on the surface and alike underneath.)

Agreed so much. But then, fanon Harry suffers from that so much.

If you do try write a sarcastic Harry you get accused of being OC.

Ridiculous.

This art is so weird! Aside from Esmeralda!Harry, and non canon scarfs, the stripes on scarfs wouldn't work like that. They'd be either vertical or horisontal.

OP
Whoops, didn't notice that.

Yup. Also, I like foe yay as much as the next person. But I like the foe to be an actual foe, not a school bully.

I was never very attracted to this pairing myself either, and that's part of why. I wrote one fic about it where they were older and Draco was still kind of a brat and Harry was kind of rolling his eyes at it and it was never very popular - maybe people didn't agree with my version. (Or maybe it wasn't the greatest fic in the world - I'm willing to admit that.)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
While I've never been interested in Drarry, there have definitely been a few ships over the years that I have seen the potential for, but that I've never really gotten into because the dominant fanon portrayal of one or both of the members of the ship has been 180 degrees from the actual canon character.

lol the best part about writing Harry is his sassiness & the best part of writing Draco & Harry together is them snarking at each other the whole time. idk what Drarry fics ur reading, OP, but those writers are missing out.

I do wonder, though, how much it might have been influenced by the movies, bc Harry's sassy sarcasm is really toned down there :/

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
I haven't read Drarry fics in a really, really long time. The ones I remember reading back in the day had Harry and Draco constantly bickering and shit talking and having hot hate sex, so reading this secret is baffling to me. What I liked so much about Drarry when I was a teen was the bickering and trying to outdo each other. Weird to know that Drarry now is Draco being a bitchy boyfriend/husband and Harry is the saintly sweet boyfriend/husband. Why does the HP fandom continue to keep disappointing me when I thought I couldn't be disappointed anymore?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
Thisssss. I won’t deny that even back in the day Fanon Draco TM was a real phenomenon and fic quality suffered for it, but there were definitely many authors who at the very least kept the snark mutual. I preferred reading Drarry from Harry’s POV anyway. Seemed to me those stories were just more believable, since fans could generally be depended upon to get Harry’s voice right after being in his head for seven fucking books.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
TBH, Harry is such an oddly characterised lead in canon (snarky and sharp when the author needs him to be, idiotic at other times; sometimes Compassionate with the Power of Love, other times throwing out badass retorts and torturing people) that I'd give people a certain amount of leeway on how they want to view most characters in that series.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 08:41 am (UTC)(link)
Harry is such a shit character tbh.
