If you had the power to give one person an easy life...

(Anonymous) 2019-05-11 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
no health problems, they and their loved ones will only die of old age, they'll never have money problems, they'll always find what they're looking for, happy marriage, whatever they want in life they'll get, etc.

The catch is, it can't be someone you've met before.

Who do you choose to receive this gift?

What if they don't want to get married?

And then you get a long life. Well played.

Oh, lol. I didn't even see the part where their loved ones also get the gift.

Can it be yourself as you've never technically met yourself?

what. how.

? what do you mean, how? You've never met yourself because you always were yourself. Unless you run into a surprise clone or something. Or you had some spiritual experience in which you somehow interacted with yourself as a second party.

I look myself in the eye every morning when I brush my teeth. I don't see how that doesn't count as meeting.

I wouldn't call that meeting unless you consider your reflection both you and a separate party at the same time. Somehow.

To me, technically, I can't meet me because I am me. Meeting means you made contact with a being that is someone or something other than you and who you also spent time away from, otherwise you never actually left them to meet them. I am not meeting myself every time I look down at my hand, or have a thought in my brain, because I am me.

If AYRT were a genie and you were the finder of their lamp, you would've totally have won this. Like, the point you're arguing should be bogus, but you're not wrong. I am chuckling.

This feels like a monkey paw scenario and it scares me. Lol. Like, if I give the gift to someone... somehow, someway, it'll backfire in the most horrifying way imaginable.

- No health problems: person is suddenly a miracle of science and the government now wants to experiment on them!

- They and their loved ones will only die of old age: they are all being kept alive in an underground dungeon away from society and no one can help them.

- They'll never have money problems: Midas touch! I accidentally turned the whole family into solid gold!

- They'll always find what they're looking for: plot twist! The family are secretly a bunch of villains and they've stolen a priceless diamond worth millions!

- Happy marriage: with someone other than their original spouse! And they're super kinky and weird and everyone in town can hear them doing the deed at night and no one can get any damn sleep!

- Whatever they want in life they'll get: Oh shit! World domination!

Honestly, I was thinking the same thing. I am totally loling at these examples!

So in other words, the person and their loved ones are solid gold villains married to new spouses who are locked away in an underground dungeon where the government experiments on them, yet while someone apparently installed microphones to record their kinky sex, nobody can help them or get any sleep. Which was their wicked goal all along: a sleepless population is an easily ruled population.

Sounds good to me.

No one.

Take away the people I have an actual connection to and would give a magically easy life to on emotional grounds, and I'd be absolutely paralyzed with indecision. I'd feel like I had to choose the best person, and how the hell do you even measure that.

Someone's good, someone with a cause. I'll need to ask around. Maybe a doctor or a charity founder.

IDK. The person I think is most deserving of that is my wife. She's been abused, has numerous health problems, etc.

Hmm. I had a friend growing up who I’ve lost touch with who was super poor and had five brothers, most or all of whom have had kids by now. I’ve met her kids and husband, but if I picked one of her brothers’ kids that got on with their aunt and uncles and cousins, that would lift like sixty people out of poverty/fix their health issues at one go.

This is very sweet, anon! :)

Depends. Would it be a waste to do it to someone who’s pretty old, already happily married, well-off, loves their job, and generally seems fulfilled, just to fix their health?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
Does it count as meeting them if I know them online? If not, an old online friend who’s going through some really awful shit, has been for at least a very long time, and barring a miracle, I don’t know if things will ever get any better. Untreated mental illness, controlling abusive partner, has lost a lot of loved ones, doesn’t have many friends.

If online friends are ineligible, then I don’t know, maybe my eventual future niece or nephew.

Malala Yousafzai

She and her family have been through so much and she's gained such a powerful voice and is doing so much good for the world. Never met her, but I feel good wishing her a good and fulfilling life.

Someone with a very large family and a very poor / challenged background from a country with some real challenges. I would have to feel like they're a good person and wouldn't take advantage of these special gifts/powers, though. A thing like this could reverberate through a community and help a lot of people, if used rightly.

Someone in Haiti. I would trust a grandma who had lived a good life and cared about all her family and her community. Bonus props if she suddenly decided she wanted to get into politics somehow. Everything could magically come together and she could become a leader who helps everyone.
