I definitely shipped it in the books but I still found myself frowning at the way they got together in the show. Really felt like a fanservicey "you want this so we made it happen OK DONE" checklist thing from the writers' part. I don't see Brienne as the type who'd get drunk and fuck her crush at the drop of a hat.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, yeah.

Shows actively weigh what their audiences want thse days though and then shoehorn stuff in. It’s why I don't bother with juggernaut shows usually, they're badly written and the characters are treated cheaply.

Might've made more sense if it'd happened before the big battle, but then they gave that to Gendrya.

I wish they'd handled the hookup in the show better too. Some foreplay. Some anxiety/nervousness on either Brienne's or Jaime's part. Oddly, I think the sex scene was completely in character, but it would have worked better for a third or fourth time scene, or as a "we haven't done it in a while" scene. It didn't really work as a first time sex scene.

Brienne in the show is supposed to be older than Brienne in the books, so I can buy her being bolder... but... yeah, I still think she would have had some reservations. And I hate complaining, because we got SO much UST and arguably romantic gestures from season 2 through 8... but then again, that's exactly the problem. The actual sex scene lacked the emotion and romance, didn't give us anything leading up to it, didn't give us anything following it (afterglow), and then torpedoed it in a puddle of Brienne's tears (though I don't think this is the actual end of them).

I always got the impression reading the books that there was something going on there. I'm actually ok with it in the show as well. But I can't help having a slightly bitter taste in my mouth over it because of how the show completely wrecked Jaime's character development. I mean he's not great in the books either and the last couple were a chore to get through but the one thing I always felt was that Jaime was 100% done with Cersei's bullshit. I feel kinda...cheated(?) that the show basically went "lol just kidding, he's going back to her. Again."

I could say more but it's a spoiler for last week so I won't elaborate other than saying I really hope it's the one (slightly better) interpretation but knowing the writers it will totally be the other one that nobody wants.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
In the books, when he went back to her, it was because he felt like he had to/was supposed to, and he's gradually learning that "actually no, he was a better person elsewhere". Slow character development but GENUINE character development, in an identifiable direction.

In the show, though, he went back to her and immediately raped her and then spent several seasons doing jack shit before faffing off back to the north, so honestly fuck show-Jaime, Brienne deserves so much better than that bullshit.

You know...you're not wrong in your assessment of show Jaime. I wish we'd had anything like the "I can be a better person elsewhere" direction of the books (and that he'd stick to it.)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
They didn't intend it to be read as rape,it was a clumsily edited scene. I for one didn't interpret it that way,but I had read the books. IA that he comes across as a jackass and his writing is all over the place

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I read the books too and in the books it wasn't rape. It wasn't the editing, it was Cersei saying "no" and "don't" the entire fucking time.

SPOILERS (maybe)

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure he's going back to be the valonqar and kill her. He doesn't want Brienne to follow him and risk losing her to Cersei when Cersei has already acknowledged their connection. That makes more sense than 'lol we just banged after I've followed you like a puppy for six seasons but I've decided to go back to my evil, crazy sister welp'

That was my interpretation too (that he was trying to protect Brienne, his eyes showed some real pain as he said those things he did) and although it was still shitty because it involved breaking her heart, it made some sort of sense. I really am dreading that it's gonna be the second idea though.

They don't actually mention the valonqar part of the prophecy in the show, so I don't know if Jaime will be the one to kill Cersei. But I do suspect he will do his part in making sure she faces the consequences of her actions.

SA - oh, I didn't know that bit! I've only read the books and taken in the plot from fandom osmosis on tumblr and talking to my siblings who watch the show and have never read the books. well, they supposedly know GRRM's ending so he could still valonqar her out of existence on the show (hopefully)?

Oh boy, after watching tonight's episode, I wish this were true.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
...wait, I said that last thing verbatim in a comment but not the rest of it. Did you do a mashup for this secret?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Me last week--"I haven't watched Game of Thrones since the first season. Nothing personal, I just don't have a lot of time for TV and it doesn't make the cut, but I really enjoy watching Brienne's character from afar. And, like, I'm low key in love with Gwendoline Christie, but who isn't?"

Me ten days later--"So, someone linked a compilation of all of Brienne's scenes up to the end of s6, and someone else did a Jaime/Brienne supercut that I watched because it went into s7, and she's been fucking GREAT in s8, and now I'm reading fic and cursing myself forever because Jaime is the FUCKING WORST sort of asshole, but, like, by universe standards he's at least *trying* and that makes him... maybe not the worst worst? And 95% of that is the show writing, because there's some really interesting nuances in his character that could make fantastic stories that just aren't getting explored, and also he makes Brienne happy so... guess this is my motherfucking ship now. Grab the motherfucking airhorn, the next two weeks are gonna be a dumpster fire, but at least some friends got dragged along with me."

It's been... interesting.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
does anyone else besides me think Gwendoline Christie had a rhinoplasty?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
do you have pics for comparisons or something?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-12 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but there is Google. Try it.

Google isn't telling me why the thread OP thinks so, so I guess we will never know. But I don't think so either?

You aren't wrong. It was pretty clear the show was heading in this direction. That being said, I hate Jaime, and Brienne deserves so much better.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-13 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
What I saw on Reddit and the lad pages on Facebook was everyone shipping her with Tormund. No one was anti-Brienne for being outside of heteronorms, they were either pro-Tormund or anti-Jaime.

I like how fanservice-y s8 has been although usually that ruins media for me. I think mainly I'm ok with it here because it looked like it would lead to Brienne and Jaime hooking up and that was the thing I wanted most from the show and didn't think would happen.
