I'm dying @ the idea of Snape knowing about LOTR.

Why? He grew up in a half-muggle household in the 60s/70s. He could easily have read the books.

True, but reading the books wouldn't have led to a visual comparison between Lucius Malfoy and Legolas. Legolas' hair color or length was never mentioned in the books, so that could only have been based on his depiction in the movies.

I could buy that he'd heard of the books. But unless it turns out that JKR always meant for Tolkien to be a wizard, there's no way that Snape would have looked at those books with anything other than the utter disdain of someone who is appalled by what stupid muggles think trolls and elves are like.
