I thought Jon would be the legitimate heir because Rhaegar married Lyanna while still married to Elia. House Targaryen had a history of polygamy, after all.

More to the point, Elia's children were killed with Elia.

Presumably. Assuming Aegon (two sons called Aegon according to the show will never not make me laugh, I'm sorry) is actually the pretender we all think he is.

Regardless, House Targaryen did have a history of polygamy, but they also have a history of civil war because of differing opinions to who should inherit the crown. It literally caused the extinction of the dragons.

But that doesn't matter -- Rhaegar thought he needed three children, because the dragon has three heads and prophecy blah blah. There wasn't set to be competition in his eyes, it's just that his first wife was too sickly to have more kids and he needed a third.

Yeah, Rhaegar didn't need to annul his first marriage, the first two kids were still relevant to the prophecy. Maybe they're trying to say Lyanna demanded it as a condition of marrying him?

In the present day, however, there's only one kid left, so no need for a civil war over who should take precedence.
