If Gothel wasn't human, why do so many women identify with having a mother like her?

There be crazy fucking people in this world who have zero business raising children. Some of the shit they do and the shit they say would not come from the actions or out of the mouths of anybody sane, but humans are still pretty capable of such things.

Yes, I know.

But that doesn't mean Gothel couldn't have been written with additional scenes to show that she had grown to love Rapunzel. By the end of the movie, it seemed as though she felt absolutely nothing towards the young woman she spent years raising - it would have been interesting to see Gothel wrestle with conflicting emotion. This isn't just related to motherhood either - it's about building compelling narrative and relationships between characters. Gothel was a cartoon character through and through when all was said and done.

DA, but I do relent that this also a Disney movie and Disney does not have the greatest track record with building well rounded villains. Many of the villains are entertaining, yes, but often lacking in human dimension.

(Ugh, I meant SA, not DA. F+)

She's a textbook narcissist. Narcissists don't do love, they do possessiveness, manipulation, and obsession.

Throwing in additional scenes where she's shown to love Rapunzel would be counterproductive and a waste of screen time.

Hmmm... I guess I can see that. I guess when viewed from that angle, perhaps I'm projecting my own writing preferences on the story and should look at it for what it is instead of what it could have been.

da

as someone who lived with a narcissistic mother, there were a lot of parts that hit way way too hard for me so it's really hard for me to give this movie a rewatch.

Same. The scene with the mirror actually hit a landmine I didn't know I had and I had some flashbacks.

From an abuse victim with a mother who is very much like Gothel: fuck off with this.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-15 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe you should fuck off for invalidating others opinions.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-15 02:47 am (UTC)(link)
You're the one invalidating experiences of actual victims, so no. "But she's not HUMAN"

She is, you just don't like that she isn't sympathetic at all.

+1

I think this is basically the point.

And I love, say, a good redemption story, but Mother Gothel... isn't it.
