Did Shia actually do something? I thought he just went a little crazy train and assumed he had some mental health problems like Amanda Bynes.

He made a short film (I think) that was that was more or less completely ripping off someone else's comic or something.

IIRC it was a film adaptation of a comic that he promoted as a competently original short film that he wrote all on his own, got a lot of praise for, then it turned out that he had just made a shot-for-shot film version of this comic. When he got caught, he made a bunch of really over the top apologies, like having a small plane circle over Los Angeles while pulling a banner that said "I'm sorry."

For me, it's the arrests, the "performance art", the plagiarism, the frankly weird and creepy Sia video, and whatever the hell went on with the movie Fury - "David (Ayer, director) told us right from the gate: ‘I need you to give me everything.’ So the day after I got the job, I joined the US National Guard. I was baptised – accepted Christ in my heart – tattooed my surrender and became a chaplain’s assistant to Captain Yates for the 41st Infantry. I spent a month living on a forward operating base. Then I linked up with my cast and went to Fort Irwin. I pulled my tooth out, knifed my face up and spent days watching horses die. I didn’t bathe for four months.".

He has been in treatment for alcoholism and been diagnosed with PTSD and that's maybe a reason for some of it.
