I always thought Gothel loved - or at least felt affection - for Rapunzel.

The ability to be that poisonous to someone you feel affection for is one of the things about human nature that scares me.

No, all her affection is for Rapunzel's hair. She loved Rapunzel the same way a vain lady loves her make-up or beauty cream, if anything.

That's an interesting choice of comparison. Sounds like you have some unresolved issues with women and feminity.

...No? She literally uses Rapunzel's hair as a fountain of youth to keep herself young and beautiful. Like a beauty cream does. That was the reason for the comparison. Rapunzel's hair is literally Gothel's favorite beauty cream.

Did you miss the part where Mother Gothel repeatedly refers to Rapunzel as her little "flower"?

The same flower she repeatedly sought over centuries to make herself youthful?

Did you miss the part where she had zero problem cutting the hair of a sleeping infant? Or the part where she forces Rapunzel to sing while brushing her hair? Or the fact that she keeps Rapunzel all to herself and tells her that she can't venture out into the world because everybody else is after her hair?

Maybe you watched a different movie? No, that's being generous. Rapunzel is clearly coveted for her MAGIC HAIR.
