There is a general implication that if people are believing they loved their kids then there might be some reason for it.

I think this is pivotal. Thanos and that GoT dude are depicted as believing they love their kids (regardless of whether their notion of love is worth fuck all). Whereas Gothel, IMO, is not depicted as believing that she loves Rapunzel.
