Yeah the way her descent into madness has been portrayed isn’t what I’d call a grand epic villain emergence. The transition feels so weak. Maybe my opinion will change as the show continues who knows, but right know it just feels like a waste of character potential due to poor execution.

I'm surprised that so many people were expecting her to end the show as a peaceful queen up until the most recent episode or the one before.

I thought it was a lot clearer that she was always power-hungry and arrogant. Even back when she frees the slaves, she always thinks of her way as the right way and her violence as necessary and right.

There's a big wide range between "Kills slavers" and "kills innocent civilians" though, and the show didn't do enough to build up the idea of her being willing to do the latter. Right up until she did, they actually made it clear she wouldn't be willing to do that.

Her dragons killed a kid and she didn't put them down. She had a choice between giving up her source of power after they proved they are capable of killing innocent humans, or unleashing them on the world to do whatever they like as long as they also do her bidding.

She didn't put them down, but she did chain them up. And that's still a long road from actively killing civilians herself.

She had the dragons chained in a dark chamber (well, the ones she could catch). And if I recall, she was pretty horrified by what happened.

Still a leap to "Let's torch half of King's Landing because nobody loves me!"

Right? I love Dany, but she's been a really ambiguous character since at least taking Meereen. Her mercy was always because of the urging of other characters. And all those characters are gone.

I think she's been unstable since she lost her baby and Drogo. We know she only had her brother before that and he was horrible, and Drogo offered her protection and power, and she would have had a family to love with their son. That's what she wanted at the start. To be loved and protected, and the possibility of having the throne that was her family's, of having a home and a connection to her past. When she lost that all she had left was power. You see her going from place to place, conquering, but she's not content with making a home and being a ruler in any of those places, she always wants more.

You can see any idea she had of making a home in Westeros is gone when she actually gets there. They're not her people, they don't love her, even the person she does love has another family and she's still alone and all she has is her power, and she only has that because he gave it to her and the people are following his lead when they call her a queen. Then she finds out that her legacy, the one connection she has left to her family is also his legacy and people would rather see him get what she always wanted.

I think it should have been a more gradual unravelling and this season is rushed, but yeah. It's been a long time coming.
