Re: Wig Thread

Personally, my opinion with wigs, as a general rule of thumb, is the more of the hairline you can see "growing out of their head" the better. It's a little funny, because people's real hair hangs forwards obscuring their hairline all the time. But because of the way a wig sits slightly unnaturally on the head, when it drapes forwards and obscures the hairline there's just something subtly off about it that says "wig." Whereas when we can clearly see the hairline, it overpowers the subtle "fake" cues with a stronger "this is real" cue.

Like, this is an ugly, OTT wig, but it looks like hair:

Again, not a subtle wig, but it looks pretty good:

Whereas these look more like wigs to me because the style is covering more of the hairline, so my brain is picking up subtler cues about how the wig is behaving (i.e. not naturally):

If we know a character is supposed to be wearing a wig as part of a disguise, I give them a pass if the wig looks obvious. It might even be intentional so as to communicate with the audience that this is a disguise.

This is true, but I think for the most part they always tried to make Sydney's wigs looks as real as possible on Alias. JJ Abrams commented on the wigs a fair amount in the BTS commentaries, and talked about how much better they got at doing her wigs over the years.
