Wig Thread

Okay, I guess I'm one of those people who is bad at detecting wigs or have different opinions on wigs than others. Could people post pictures of what they think good/bad wigs look like?

Sometimes I can detect, sometimes I can't. Usually it doesn't bother me. The only one that I can think of that really bugged me was Natasha in Cap 2.

Just something about the really straight wig makes it look really fake to me. Not sure why this one.

I can't even tell that is a wig.

It just looks fake to me. Maybe I'm wrong. But hair that straight does not look natural or good on her.

That looks like...someone who's been running around all day and their hair is getting a little frazzled.

Doesn't look like a wig at all.

At least I'm not the only one who thought her IM2 hair was the worst! It looked so stiff and I was wondering if they were trying to emulate a specific comic look but it was one of those things where it doesn't really look as good once you bring it into the real world where there's gravity and motion and whatnot. It's also weird that she takes the time to change into her fighting outfit but doesn't tie her hair back.

I thought her Winter Soldier hair was fine. I like Nat's less fussy styles the best.

Heee.

In IM2 (is that the scene you mean?), her hair is *up*, all nice and tight and smooth, and she takes it down as she goes in to fight. So stupid.

Yeah, and the colour is a bit plastic looking.

I can literally never tell when someone is wearing a wig. I didn't realize Dany on GoT was wearing a wig until someone told me. I thought she had extensions.

Maybe because I was so....enthralled with what was going on in the film, but I didn't know Kate Mara had a wig in the second half of Fantastic Four until I got online.

This is pretty awful. If you look at her part, you can see that's not a scalp. See how her natural hair falls into the part but it starts off going away from her scalp? That is hair. The other is wig. It also looks super dry and terrible. It might be real hair, but nobody has taken the time to care for it after bleaching it to whatever the hell shade that is. Wigs need a lot of care to look remotely real and this hasn't had enough.

Personally, my opinion with wigs, as a general rule of thumb, is the more of the hairline you can see "growing out of their head" the better. It's a little funny, because people's real hair hangs forwards obscuring their hairline all the time. But because of the way a wig sits slightly unnaturally on the head, when it drapes forwards and obscures the hairline there's just something subtly off about it that says "wig." Whereas when we can clearly see the hairline, it overpowers the subtle "fake" cues with a stronger "this is real" cue.

Like, this is an ugly, OTT wig, but it looks like hair:

Again, not a subtle wig, but it looks pretty good:

Whereas these look more like wigs to me because the style is covering more of the hairline, so my brain is picking up subtler cues about how the wig is behaving (i.e. not naturally):

If we know a character is supposed to be wearing a wig as part of a disguise, I give them a pass if the wig looks obvious. It might even be intentional so as to communicate with the audience that this is a disguise.

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
This is true, but I think for the most part they always tried to make Sydney's wigs looks as real as possible on Alias. JJ Abrams commented on the wigs a fair amount in the BTS commentaries, and talked about how much better they got at doing her wigs over the years.

I quite like the Melisandre wig in GoT

http://www1.pictures.zimbio.com/mp/V2wU9x9KjCil.jpg

It's a nice shade of red on the actress with her pale skin, a little bit over the top because she's a creepy witch type, and the style they normally use suits a wig and still looks like a normal way hair might behave.

In contrast you can see this wig from Twilight. The hair on the top of the head is very fixed in place to keep from exposing any gaps, but the hair is supposed to be loose and flowing. It doesn't look natural, and IMO that's a hairline for a mature man, not a teenager.

That Twilight image looks like a bad photoshop. Who plasters down the front section of their hair and only that section when it's supposed to be loose?

I can't find the screenshot I took to show a friend, but the chick who played Hester in Mortal Engines. All the money they spent on that movie and they couldn't get her a decent wig.

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Movie Hester's appearance was disappointing as a book fan.

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
I had heard that criticism too. Like she was supposed to be genuinely disfigured and she got the movie POTO treatment all, "He's slightly sunburnt on one side, to arms!"

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. You got it.

If you're interested here's a story about how she's described in the books and why she "can't" look like that in the movie because "we need to believe that Tom and Hester fall in love" - yes, the director actually said that.

I can't tell apparently, because most of the time I think it's their actual hair, or has been dyed(if it's a funky colour).

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
I think I just don't care enough to pay attention. I know that actors may wear wigs in movies a lot, even when it doesn't seem like it would be necessary, so playing attention to it seems kind of pointless.

Re: Wig Thread

[personal profile] tabaqui 2019-05-17 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I think i'm just thinking, mostly 'it's hollywood, this person has cut/dyed/curled/straightened/styled their hair a million times for life, for this movie, etc. Of *course* it's a little weird'.

That and a lot of the hairstyles obviously require gel or hairspray or whatever, so the hair looks flat or strange or too big to be 'normal' no matter what.

Re: Wig Thread

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
I can't think of a single example where I've ever noticed someone was wearing a wig. I'll watch some show/movie, and read reviews or discussion on a forum or something and there's a ton of people going on about how some character's wig looked soooooo bad and I never realized it...not sure why I can't seem to tell.

Re: Wig Thread

Good quality wigs are really hard to tell that they're actually wigs. I follow someone on instagram who has her own wig line and they have to be applied by a professional usually. You can't tell that it's a wig at all.
