can i ask why it's the pits? are people locking their stuff behind a paywall that you can't see?

or are you saying it sucks bc people ask for donos in the first place bc the economy is shitty and you wish they didn't need to?

The later mostly. I also have conflicting views on profiting off of other's intellectual property, but ultimately figure if it's already got a fandom large enough that fanworks are profitable, the IP holders losing a few bucks over it isn't that big of a deal.

NAYRT—honestly, I don’t feel like most of the IP holders for huge fandoms don’t always lose money to people buying fanworks, because often, the fanwork is for non-canon ships there’s no merch for, or background characters there’s no merch for, or shows that just don’t have much merch, period, and so on. Now, I can see their losing money to bootleg merch, that is, cheap(er) knockoffs of official merch.

A lot of the indie game makers and webcomic creators have begun to ask fandom not to sell merch or prints of their fanworks because it does conflict with their own attempts to sell merchandise.

Yeah, a lot of stuff is locked behind a paywall now when fandom used to be a fun/free hobby.

I can understand paying for art or something from an artist that you like. However now people are charging for the smallest of stuff.

At least when people offer some kind of service for money it's fair. But a lot of people are now begging for money with some (most of the time fake) sob story. EVERYONE NEEDS MONEY.

Yeah, pretty much all fanzines are behind a paywall. Even the purely digital ones. Fandom used to be just for fun and free. I remember participating in fan weeks/months where everyone just shared their stuff and it didn't cost anything. Now all these huge events you have to pay over $60 to see.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I get why they charge, but I feel like it's fundamentally changed the dynamic. I could be romanticizing a little here, but I've always viewed fandom where everyone's more or less peers so introducing a monetary aspect establishes a consumer hierarchy that I'm not a huge fan of. Again I'm not against charging people for stuff you've worked hard on, but it also changes the dynamic between fans in a way that makes me feel like we're not all peers and it might not be made out of love for the series.

This is an excellent point. I mean, BNFs have always been a thing, but the commercialisation is only going to make that more and more obvious.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:39 am (UTC)(link)
Good point. I had a friend who wasn't a BNF (but she was relatively popular) once confess she actually wasn’t that into the fandom she wrote anymore but it got the most attention and feedback.

Well, zines used to be sold for actual money, I had no idea they started to be distributed for free at some point (I thought they died out).

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know if they were ever free - I have a bunch from the 80s and 90s that I paid a pretty penny for. People usually had to at least pay for printing and postage and that could be pretty expensive back in the day, especially foreign postage.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yup. Some of my favourite art tutorials have been taken down from deviantart and tumblr and re-uploaded behind a paywall.
