I agree, and no one is forcing us to subscribe or pay or donate.

& again, I genuinely agree that it's sad so many people have to accept honestly less than their talents are worth and *hope* that people contribute monthly.

can i ask why it's the pits? are people locking their stuff behind a paywall that you can't see?

or are you saying it sucks bc people ask for donos in the first place bc the economy is shitty and you wish they didn't need to?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The later mostly. I also have conflicting views on profiting off of other's intellectual property, but ultimately figure if it's already got a fandom large enough that fanworks are profitable, the IP holders losing a few bucks over it isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah, a lot of stuff is locked behind a paywall now when fandom used to be a fun/free hobby.

I can understand paying for art or something from an artist that you like. However now people are charging for the smallest of stuff.

At least when people offer some kind of service for money it's fair. But a lot of people are now begging for money with some (most of the time fake) sob story. EVERYONE NEEDS MONEY.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, pretty much all fanzines are behind a paywall. Even the purely digital ones. Fandom used to be just for fun and free. I remember participating in fan weeks/months where everyone just shared their stuff and it didn't cost anything. Now all these huge events you have to pay over $60 to see.

Yup. Some of my favourite art tutorials have been taken down from deviantart and tumblr and re-uploaded behind a paywall.

Me too.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone who does have a fandom/fan-merch related company as my primary job? it's not the economy. there is NO money in this. the only relation to the economy is being unable to get a job that isn't retail or food service and having to try to make money off fandom instead. but you can't. you can manage to not be homeless, but you can't make a killing.

fandom is a luxury industry. when the economy is bad, people don't have luxury income to blow on $500 cosplays and $200 figures, they have to scrimp for their POPs and even then only buy them when they can go to C2E2 and get them through a deal package. I'm waiting for the day I have to explain how the tariffs against China are affecting our consumerism to the younguns who've been happily throwing their disposable cash at Chinese bootleggers for all these yeas.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-17 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It irritated me to no end when an artist would spam links to their Patreon with every single post (god forbid when they would reblog/retweet themselves multiple times a day too) and was one of the factors that led me to quitting social media. I hate being forced to watch ads on television or when browsing articles online; spamming links for art is no different than any other product and quickly grows very tiresome to see over and over again.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
It only really annoys me when the artist is all, "Consumerism is evil! Capitalism is evil! Art should be pure and untainted by financial gain! Here's a link to my Patreon!"

Man, I get what you're saying OP, but the comments here are all really gross. You all got really spoiled by following artists' personal blogs and now you're upset that they realized their skills have value. Either pay up for the zine or teach yourself to draw between two other jobs and see how easy it is, lmao.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I honestly don't care how talented an artist is. If they're doing work based around fandom, they shouldn't be charging. If they want to charge, then draw something unique. Fandom is someone else's work. In fact, I'm surprised the artists in question haven't gotten into trouble by the actual creators of said fandom, for making money off their work. (There are exceptions around things such as parody, when it comes to copyright).
Most actual creators aren't too bothered about things like fan art and fan fiction, because people aren't making money and are having fun.
Again, for all those people saying 'these people are talented and should be paid' this isn't the argument, for me at least.
They shouldn't be making money off someone else's work!

Well, a little perspective here. I'm a fan translator. I translate those manga that have never been and will never be picked up by licensing companies, those video games no one cares about anymore, and those doujinshi that would never be translated anyway. I do it primarily because I love the canon and I want to make it more accessible to people who don't speak Japanese, but - and here's the kicker - it takes literal hours and hours of hard work, plus the skill required to be able to read and translate the Japanese in the first place.

So, please tell me why I SHOULDN'T have the equivalent of a tip jar for people who enjoyed what I've done to toss in a few bucks to show their support?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:41 am (UTC)(link)
As a person that used to translate stuff for fandom in my free time when I was still a student and who stopped doing that, because I actually have to spend this time translating financial and legal documents to get paid for that and be able to pay for my rent - yeah, get that tip jar. Nobody's forcing anyone to leave you any money, anyway.

I completely disagree with the concept of being paid to produce fanworks. Want to earn money, charge for your original works, and don't tempt corporations to bring lawsuits for copyright infringement into fannish spaces. If you don't think this is plausible, go learn your fandom history.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'd love to make money from writing, but I've never been tempted to monatise my fanfiction, even though it's infinitely more popular than my original stuff. I don't judge individuals who do; I've got a secure job that supports my happily-frugal lifestyle, but plenty of people don't.

But I think it's changed the culture of fandom in a way I don't like. It makes fans into customers, and all the obligations that implies. I'm just tired of everything being for sale. It feels like another avenue of human interaction is being polluted. How much is genuine and how much is marketing?

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
I used to be all against it and than I grew up, started paying my own bills and realised that 98% of other people get at least some extra money from their extracurricular activities, and fuck it, let's fandom people earn some cash too. They also have to eat. And it's not like everything is closing down; it's mostly people asking to support them if somebody can afford to. Nothing wrong with that.

There's always AO3. Plenty of free fanfiction and I have yet to see a tip jar. Read exchange and gift stories.

I don't think there's anything wrong having the equivalent of a tip jar; it's when everything is behind a paywall that thing get iffy (IMO).

I agree. Especially since fandom is such a muddy zone with IP rights and all that. It's stuff like this that's made it easier for me to kind of stay away from fandom as a whole lately.
