I honestly don't care how talented an artist is. If they're doing work based around fandom, they shouldn't be charging. If they want to charge, then draw something unique. Fandom is someone else's work. In fact, I'm surprised the artists in question haven't gotten into trouble by the actual creators of said fandom, for making money off their work. (There are exceptions around things such as parody, when it comes to copyright).
Most actual creators aren't too bothered about things like fan art and fan fiction, because people aren't making money and are having fun.
Again, for all those people saying 'these people are talented and should be paid' this isn't the argument, for me at least.
They shouldn't be making money off someone else's work!

Oh go off, they do plenty of work by drawing it and putting in the effort. But no, that doesn't matter to you, does it?

Uh, yeah, because you're highjacking the love people have for an already established character that other people did the heavy lifting on... Drawing [someone else's concept] real good isn't as much work as getting that "original stuff" off the ground.

Plenty of "actual creators" have come out and said that they don't mind fanartists getting paid for their work, as long as it isn't stolen art or factory level production. Those that haven't are generally the big names like Nintendo or Marvel, who aren't going to go out of business because somebody is selling Princess Peach charms. So it's about the morality of the matter for you, but you really don't seem like you work in the industry on any scale.

You're making your argument clearly but all it's doing is making you look like somebody who doesn't create your own anything and therefore thinks it magically appears on the internet for you to enjoy. I understand that you have good intentions but "Nobody should make money off something that existed previously" is a very hardline stance that I think most creatives would disagree with.

Which ones? As I've mostly seen creators asking people to stop and/or only being okay with not-for-profit fanworks. I actually think most creatives that I'm familiar with would be more likely to take the hardline stance that you are rejecting.

Homestuck, Undertale, Doki Doki Literature Club, lots of other indie games or webcomics. The usual rule is that individual commissions are fine, just don't sell pillows with official art you printed out, kind of thing. But admittedly it's a case by case basis.

If we all followed the hardline stance in question then any intellectual property that you didn't start, regardless of copyright, shouldn't ever make money. In which case we wouldn't have things like Wicked or a million Sherlock interpretations... Although that last point might negate whatever else I'm saying.

WHAT? That's a hell of an assumption. I'm one of tens of thousands of fanfic writers who produce a LOT of content, work very hard at it, and would never charge for it. Never ever. That's not what fanfic is about, or what it's for. It's not even about the original creators for me (although that's also a valid argument) - it's about the way it changes the power dynamic within online fandom. If we ever get to a place where some people can afford to keep up with the WIP everyone's following and others can't, if some people can afford to look at the hot fanart and others can't...then fandom will lose pretty much everything that appeals to me most as a parasocial space.

Hmmmm, okay! Good point, maybe I was a little harsh. I've been talking about tip jars, not pay walls, which is my fault for assuming. I don't think fan content should have a block to who can enjoy it, but when those who have an OPTION to pay for what they've made are called greedy, the protest comes off as very high-horsey.
