My guess is that questions were tailored to the student's age and experience. But yeah, I'd rather be a Hufflepuff.

Maybe. But if I'm remembering the book correctly (don't have a copy to check) the door asked the same question to two different people before it got answered. Then again, both of the people knocking were adults, so maybe it would have been different if the next person had been a first year. *shrug*

It definitely feels to me like JKR dropped that in without thinking through the fact that it's actually not that great a protective mechanism.

Her overall skill at Bildungsroman writing notwithstanding, there are definite logical flaws in her writing which could've been ironed out with an editor who was actually on the ball.
