Text: I found the Book Seven explanation of how Ravenclaws get into their common room (answer a question instead of giving a password) to be monumentally stupid.

It's not a bad idea in theory, but the questions seemed to be more philosophical than factual (i.e. "Which came first, the phoenix or the flame?"), and you can be book smart but not good with existential questions. Plus, what if you're a first year muggleborn? You could be stuck out there a long time.

When I first started reading the books, I figured I was a Ravenclaw. But thanks in part to this bit of worldbuilding (and due to growing up), I'm starting to think I may be a Hufflepuff instead.

I think the fact that it's philosophical rather than factual is a good thing, because it means that instead of there being one correct answer and if you don't know it you're out of look, the important thing is being able to analyze and grapple with the question asked and come up with some kind of a response. There's more flexibility, you know? And I think that's a much more useful kind of intelligence, and a more useful way to train it, than to just ask for recall of facts.

I agree that it sucks if you can't answer a question and get locked out, but Hogwarts seems like it's fine with that in general - it's not just a Ravenclaw problem, people can also get locked out of Gryffindor if they forget the password.

Right! "Where do vanished objects go?"

"Into nonbeing, that is to say, everything." or "Into the ether" would probably both be right.

Also lol @ the fact that McGonagall can just walk into Ravenclaw's common room if she wanted to because she's that badass.

Yeah, I mean what if you give an answer that's different but give a good answer for it? I imagine you'd show enough smarts to be let in.

Fair point, but I feel like a mix would be best (and who knows, maybe it was? We only saw two questions in canon). I guess part of my problem with it was that the answers we saw came across to me as that "sounds profound but also slightly ridiculous" style, and it turned me off the concept.

It's just funny to know that someone like Hermione could have gone into Ravenclaw quarters anytime she wanted, unless she would have been rejected for being too literal or something.

I can't remember the Hufflepuff section from Pottermore totally but don't they just, like, not have any restrictions on their common room in the first place? Lol

I would definitely want to be a Hufflepuff no matter how much the Hat wanted to make me a Ravenclaw

My guess is that questions were tailored to the student's age and experience. But yeah, I'd rather be a Hufflepuff.

Maybe. But if I'm remembering the book correctly (don't have a copy to check) the door asked the same question to two different people before it got answered. Then again, both of the people knocking were adults, so maybe it would have been different if the next person had been a first year. *shrug*

I love that idea.

I, who has identified a little too strongly as Ravenclaw for my own good, endorse this headcanon.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Wouldn't one person be able to answer the question to let the whole group in? That worked for the Gryffindor common room if somebody forgot the password.

OP

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 10:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Probably, but my vague memory of the scene (like I said above, don't have a copy to refer to) is that that sort of thing was discouraged, because "how will you learn otherwise?" Again, not a bad idea in theory, but it would probably give me a lot of anxiety if I'd had to deal with it.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just imagining OP having this whole fight with the door about the existential nature of the password situation and the door being like, "yup, you're one of us, come on in."

Lmao

That actually made me laugh and feel a little better about the situation. Thanks!

me, a muggleborn, screaming pedantically: "FIRE PREDATES ALL BIRDS BY SEVERAL BILLION YEARS"

aka me, an empiricist, getting a masters in Lit, for the entire duration of my critical theory class

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like the existence of magic would probably require us to rethink some conclusions about empiricism and science though. How do we know the Phoenix evolved into existence the same way birds did?

LOL! I was thinking "Obviously the correct answer is 'flame' because it exists independently of pheonixes!"

I got Ravenclaw on Pottermore. I never felt an affiliation to a house beforehand (as I was never as into Harry Potter as some) but when I think about it Ravenclaw makes sense given what I was like at school.

But man would I find this annoying if I was super tired, had already done loads of work that day and just wanted to go to my bed. Sometimes I'm not in the mood for answering questions anymore so I would totally be the person yelling exasperatedly at the door after an intense study session or whatever.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-25 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure I saw a headcanon post on tumblr basically stating that this is what it would REALLY be like with Ravenclaws.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-18 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It'd be the easiest room to break into too. Like just as easily can a Ravenclaw not know the answer that another house could.

Honestly I feel like this would just give me terrible anxiety. Even if I know I could probably figure out the answers, every time I had to open the door -- especially if someone else is watching me -- I'd have this sinking feeling that I would end up with a question I couldn't answer and it would probably make me dread having to return to the common room.
