Re: Awkward Question Thread

How do I tell my extended family not to hug my left side because I'm still healing from a breast biopsy when I don't want to tell them about my breast biopsy?

Follow up boob question:

Would it be awkward to go braless in front of family? Not nude, but like, a slightly visible nipple through a thick shirt? The bruise goes past where underwire would sit and I can maybe handle a soft crop top thing, but wearing a real bra will hurt.

Fake another injury. A cracked or bruised rib, perhaps.

I don't think I'd get away with that because they'd want a full story and I get so flustered trying to lie to people.

Maybe lead with right-side hug and/or say "Oh, I fell/bumped into something/body-checked someone in a battle royale and my left side's a bit tender"?

Follow-up: Depends on family. Besides soft crop top or camisole with support, I've read people's positive experiences with BreastNest: https://breastnest.com/

I like the name breast nest lol.

I could just give people awkward side hugs!

Thanks.

How long is the situation going to last, and what are your thoughts on lying to extended family members? Faking a left shoulder injury would probably get you off the hook for hugging.

Regarding the bra thing -- you could probably pick up some breast petals or something similar at Target for cheap-ish to take care any pokey nipple awkwardness. Beyond that, they're your family. Hopefully, as long as one's not pointing northeast and the other southwest or something, they're not scrutinizing your boobs.

I'll just be seeing them for a few days.

My family are the type of people who do scrutinise unfortunately. Weight, skin, boobs, hair, clothes.

Thanks for the nipple cover idea!

Seconding the nipple petals/covers idea! I've never used them myself but if you find a good brand they should work well. A thin vest top underneath is a good shout too.

I don't have any great advice here but I wish you all the best and hope the biopsy results come out well. I had a breast scare when I was younger. Lots of (gentle right-sided) hugs for you. <3

Thank you. I should get results this week. I'll update somewhere on here when I do because I haven't told anyone IRL and people here have been very nice about it.

It might be cooler tomorrow so hopefully I can wear something baggy and just be like what tits? Lol.

Just tell them you slept funny or tried to work out and pulled one of those muscles over your rib section.

But seriously... learn to discourage your family from interrogating you about every aspect of your life. You do it by deciding exactly how much information you want to tell them, and then stonewalling them when they ask further questions. Don't pussyfoot around and try to be nice about it. Ask them why they need to know. Straight up say it's personal, it's private, and you're done talking about it now and you'd like them to respect that or you'll have to leave. Then if they don't respect it, get up and leave. Hang up. Stop texting back. LEAVE.

Would a sports bra work?
